Hi,

I was wondering if all the SKS's imported into Canada are from the same supplier. I.e. Lever Arms, MilArm, SFRC, Frontier, Trade-Ex, P&S etc.

Do they all have the 'franken-pin' on the mag? Which dealers offer the best quality SKS's?

I'm curious how many SKS rifles have been imported into Canada.

We must have more now than Russia does. (just kidding)

There's been at least 5 different importers that I can think of off the top of my head.

IZH-Impex,pinned on follower

Bell,original franken-pinner

Lever,franken-pinned

Trade-Ex,franken-pinned and current style pin through the mag floor

Westrifle,franken-pinned and the ones who got the current system initiated.

If it's franken-pinned, that means the original serial number on the bottom of the mag is scratched out and electropenciled on the side of the mag?

Also, are these all refurbs? Are they force matched or do they actually match?

As of now only old importation will have frank pinned. All importation from Russia Ukraine Kazakhstan and etc ex-USSR countries will have new system pinning. 98 % of rifles imported into Canada are REFURBISHED. It does not mean that those are bad rifles. I don't think many people know what refurbishment means in Russia.

i have bought one in the early 90's wasent pinned. now i use an ameriacan eagle 5 rounder. bought both the rifle and the mag from a guy in halifax for less than 120 dollars.

i just purchased a refurb in Halifax that is pinned from the bottom and the original serial number is visible. (like my chinese sks but not quite as neatly done)It's a 1950 unit with the spring firning pin. No refurb stamps on the metal (that i can see), the stock is a birch 1952 with forced serial number.

I am curious about the refurb process as well, were these firearms sent back to the armory after being issued, made operational again and then placed in storage in case of the big one? Would mine have been refurbed and stored since the 1950s?

Will Westrife be bringing in more SKS?

Thanks

Bob

i have 1951 with a refurb stock that is from a '54, 3 different serial numbers(one almost sanded off barley visible, one stamped out with x's) on it heavily used and refurbished, but the metal gun itself from the research i did is all matching and non refurbished and look's like it has hardly ever been fired. I refinished the stock and now it's a real beauty with character.

and yes westrifle is getting more, they said they are just waiting for the next shipment

Just like rebuilding an engine, there are different levels of refurbishment of SKSs. They range from only a reshallacing to total replacement of major components. Some say a refurb is a better rifle after going through the rebuild than when it was originally built.

From a collector type view the less electropencil the better! Thats the easy way to see whats been worked. Thin items like the gas tube,op rod, may be pencilled but not the trigger guard or bolt or cover, plus older marked rifles shouldn't be in a laminate stock. Westrifle is good to deal with in my estimation and they had a useable site when I dealt with him, and I recieved exacltly what I ordered(I have no ties to Westrifle) cheers

I managed to score a beautiful '51 Tula in a laminate stock that indicates it was refurbished, but I can't tell. Stock is original, or at least was never marked until it got to my receiver. A nice score from the WSS $157 special.

Which begs the question, if WSS can RETAIL these for that price why can't everyone else that deals in similar quantities? I feel bad for those who bought one for more money and now want to sell it for the original purchase price on the EE; probably hard to move one for any more than $175 shipped now.

For the longest time we only had access to Chinese type sks's now with the glut of Russians the market is wide open. $157 is a great price, cheaper than the chinese ones were 8 yrs ago and cheaper than the Russians were last year.

Price has really dropped off in the last couple of weeks. They are still seem to be selling fast at TSE at the $200 plus, but Wholesale sports has been doing the $157 special as well, $168 AB taxes all in. With Marstar's $75 specials its a good time to be a SKS fan.

i am unsure where my sks was imported from it is a russian and the magazine does not have the franken pin it has the riveted pin. i think this rifle is a rebuild though and not all original parts all matching numbers but lots of marks indicating rebuild. the barrel looks ok to me but the rifling definitely isnt crisp. was going to ask someone about the norinco chinese ones with chrome lined barrels i know mine has milled parts and chinese are more stamped but are they still as good?
