rust blue

Who in Canada can be relied upon to do a good job of slow rust blueing?

Likely only you.

In all seriousness, it's a time sink, and most smiths have gotten away from it, because they cannot regularly find customers willing to pay enough to make it a profitable use of their time.

Pretty much the hardest piece of gear to find, is a tank large enough to boil the parts in. Lots of info online if you go looking.

By memory, there are a couple different outfits making rust blue solutions, Laurel Mountain Forge is one. Some have reported good results using Birchwood Casey "Plum Brown", as the rusting agent too.

Thanks for the advice. However, I have now found a qualified fellow who does rust blueing.

I did it myself only once...back in the mid-80s....on a beater Trapdoor Springfield that had been chopped to carbine length...and I did use Birchwood Casey "Plum Brown", as the rusting agent. I used no boiling tank or steam closet...I used my bath tub and its shower head...and at times a kitchen oven....and it turned out very well....I was impressed. But no interest in repeating that particular learning curve.

Great!
Let us know how the job turns out, and whether it's worth a referral!
