Rust Bluing Solution

Just go to the Canadian Tire "Pool Cleaning Supplies" section and purchase a bottle of Muriatic Acid.

If you want to play around a bit, just for fun on a few bits and pieces of scrap steel.

Get a can of Draino, add some salt, vinegar, and pour boiling water onto it. Use that mixture and see what happens.

Not as fast/dark as the acid types but it works

The question was where to get the Nitric acid. Pretty sure CT does not have it.

Muriatic Acid is Hydrochloric Acid, my bad.

Geez, don't you folks ever do online searches????

London Drugs or Walmart Pharmacies or Beauty sections have Nitric Acid in smaller quantities.

I just watched this. Looks simple enough that even I can do it.

Highlight the site, google, and watch. Less than five minutes.

The whole process appears to take an hour, but cheap/easy.

Don't always believe what you see on Youtube. I follow one instruction on Youtube on parkerizing to the letter, It look great and easy on Youtube but mine turned out terrible. Got some commercial parkering solution and tried it on the same part and it turned out great. I learned over the years that if you tried to save some money, sometime it will ruin your part and cost you more in the end.

This is true and there are a lot of variables in bluing...the composition of the steel, humidity in your area, the water you boil parts off in (if that's the process) I just use tap water that comes out of Lake Huron and never had a problem. Some bluing may look great but is not very durable, easily wears off. Practically anything corrosive will give you some sort of color as long as it isn't too aggressive. I've used vinegar on Damascus barrels to bring out the pattern, they are still quite white but at least the pattern is visible. It would be nice to have access to some of the old factory recipes/processes for bluing. I once refinished a Rem 31 pump gun, it was a little worn on the edges, but that original blue was the toughest, hardest to remove I have ever seen.
