A buddy brought me his next to new rifle and it has rust in the barrell. I tried bore solvent three times and keep get dirty cloths. Anyone have any ideas . A brush on a drill ?

Wipe out.... def wouldn't use a drill whatever you do don't do that. Some sort of solvent like wipe out carb cleaner then an oil g96, royal purple gun oil. bore butter , shoot and repeat till it's clean ? I only use a one piece cleaning graphite or plastic coated rod that swivels on the handle as to not damage the barrel.

You are sure short on details. With so few details I can only liken it to how my wife would describe a gun . . . no idea if it would be a cap gun, BB gun or a Pop gun!!!!
Some might say Cosmoline or bluing.

Could be copper build up.....

Sorry , I've used bore solvent and barricade , run in the solvent , then clean it out and then spray in barricade til the patches are clean . Then solvent again eye. Three times so far . He wa s using corrosive 7.62x 39 ammo .

Run a brush with solvent through it a few times , then put a patch through it ; no need to use a drill.....if any rust is left , shooting it should clean it out....

I would try soaking the bore with Kroil or PB Blaster and let it sit for a couple of days .. then repeat. Don't get it on the stock finish or bluing

not sure if RemClean is still available but I would finish up with that or something similar like JB bore cleaner

Kroil is a great product but if you can't get it any penetrating oil should work albeit not as fast as Kroil. Don"t spin a brush in the bore as you will most certainly damage the crown. It's possible the bore will be pitted as well from not cleaning after using corrosive ammo but there is nothing to be done for that.

You don't say how severe the rust is. I've used a stainless bore brush with lots of oil on an old milsurp with patches coming out orange from rust and it worked well. I'd never use a stainless brush in a good bore, but sadly the damage has been done, and the chore now is to remove what rust you can, and prevent further damage.

Deep creep is another alternative and more locally found.

I picked up 3 rifles in a package deal recently, and while the seller said that they were fair, an SKS and a full wood Swedish Mauser both had rusty bores. The solution that worked great was electrolytic rust removal. I made a solution with washing soda and used a sacrificial anode made of rebar and a piece of round bar that fit inside the bore. I wrapped the round bar in electrical tape, leaving parts of it open so that the electrons could flow. It took 12 hours of current, but both bores are now shiny and bright. Haven't had a chance to shoot them yet though.
