rust in my barrels, now what?!

I use 90% water 10% Ballistol to remove corrosive residue. Then a little grease for storage works fine have several Russian surplus guns shooting nothing but corrosive primers....

Get an old copper brush wrap with 000 steel wool
DONT USE OIL , let wool do its job, you wont hurt the gun
At all, run through bore with the rifling Fir a few mins
At a regular speed as if you were cleaning with solvent
Take the brush off, then run patches doused in
A penetrant like rust check in red can
I use the green can rust check for long term storage
It turns greasy / waxy and resists moisture bigtime
Once you run the rust check and patches through bore
Dry it and steel wool it again but use the rust check on
The brush this time, ive cleaned Nd saved dozens of
Guns for people who had fired corrosive ammo Nd no
Cleaning afterwards, inhad an 8mm mauser here a guy
Fired 1000 rounds of turkish ball ammo through and never cleaned
He figured it was toast, bore dark Nd frosted
I did what i explained in this post and got the barrel back
To pretty well the cond it was in prior, but took some
Time/ patience and elbow grease

Next time try Fluid Film, but give it a good cleaning first. I'll shoot corrosive ammo and not worry, but I do clean them well when I get home and oil them up. None of my guns have ever had a rust problem.

...never oil any of my barrels any more...stored a rifle once in a vinyl gun case out here in a very dry climate and came up rusty!...mistake on 2 counts as a youth...clean 'em, dry 'em, put it in locked, airy wooden lockers that are hidden and bolted to my home now and no problem...

I have used fine steel wool in rusted rifle barrels for at least thirty years, ever since I tired it on an old 8mm barrel I got from Globe Firearms. It worked!

Just last week, I got a rifle off the EE that had a bore that actually had chunks of rust in a very dark bore. Started with ammonia to get rid of any powder fouling that might be under it, then KROIL with steel wool. Took a few goes, over several days, but the bore looks much better now. It will be fine for hunting.

I can vouch for this method. I watched Why Not? go to work on that rifle and it was a complete night and day difference.
