I need some advice how to get rid of rust from my shotgun. I lent my uncle my mossberg 590 over the last 5 months. When I got it back yesterday I found rust on the top of the barrel. Just a few small patches, still I hate to see that on any of my guns. How can I get rid of the little rust splotches ? Any advice would be very helpful.

If its happened in the last 5 months it s/b surface rust. Likely stored in a gun case. Use very fine(000) stell wool on these spots. Treat with oil after the rust is gone . G96 will bring the blueing back somewhat ----good luck----Cowboy

Another vote for the old standby. #9 removes and stops further rusting but is gentle enough to not screw up the blueing. I've heard of really bad cases where very rusty pieces are slathered up libberally with Hoppes #9 then wrapped tightly with plastic wrap for several days to let the stuff work with pretty good results.
For what you describe rmkm' as Slash says I would get some 0000 steel wool, no coarser, wet it with #9 and gently rub the rusted area. Will probably work like a hot damn..

You did not say which finish is on your 590, but if it is parkerized, I would try to rub the spots with a patch soaked in gun oil before I got too carries away with the steel wool. Parkerizing is pretty forgiving, and the spots should disappear. You can save the steel wool for the top of your uncle's head - priceless.
If rust has appeared on the outside of the barrel, I would be concerned that rust migh be starting inside the barrel as well. Scrubbing the bore with J-B Bore cleaner wouldn't hurt at all.

What about Gasoline? Gasoline can remove rust from any metal like open razors as well as prevent rust. It is cheap enough. Put the barrel in a container of some sort and let the gasoline do it's work for a few days. No abrasive rubbing which can damage other parts of the barrel.

I had the same problem, some very minor rust on the barrel, after lending my 590 to a friend while I was overseas. You may want to dissassemble the magazine tube to inspect it, I was surpised to see that the inside of mine was seriously rusted even though the rest of the gun seemd mostly fine.
