Rust on the slide

While cleaning my Trojan, I noticed some faint traces of rust in-between slide's serrations, and on the front stippled part of the grip. The rust is from touching the gun: only the left-side serrations are rusting because that's how I rack the slide, without touching the right side.

I'm the 2nd owner, and don't know if STI warrants their finish against rust. Actually, I don't know if any manufacturer does that, LOL.

Anyway, I soaked the rusty areas in Ballistol & then wiped them off, the rust is almost barely visible now. I'd like to try Eezox - apparently that's what most pros recommend for rust prevention, especially for safe queens. Does anyone know of a Canadian dealer that may carry it? I suppose I can always ask my buddy in the US to get it from Midway, I just wanted to know if I can get it sooner rather than later. TIA.

Rust is not a warranty issue unless you open the box and its rusty or they do a recall about a bad finnish.

I use Break Free Collector and pretty happy with it. Its CLP without the cleaning propertys....just the LP I guess lol.

Gee, I can remember when it would have been a chargeable offence for the NCOs to find rust on my C1, after a week in the west coast woods in winter, and nearly all the steel on the rifle "in the white" after thirty years in service use!

Methinks you may wish to use a little oil (of whatever variety) when you store pistol!!

;)

Strong advocate for CLP (love that stuff). Still is a chargeable offense for having a rusty weapon. Four people on my BMQ cousin platoon were charged for rusty weapons. As you said, when they're "in the white" as much as these weapons are, it's hard to keep them rust free ><

Anywho, Marstar has that deal on for three bottles of CLP for about $25 shipped. Think I may just have to pick some up :D

Agreed, CLP is the sh!t. CLP + steel wool will make quick work of any amount of rust.

Unit wpns are usually in better condition since they'll make their way to the Wpn Techs at some point.

Wpns at trg bases and units are often beat to sh2t and as mentioned, in the 'white.' Constant CLP is required or clever use of wax product on white metal(eg chapstick) ;)

Take note - When I talk of the C1 days, t'was pre CLP, too!

How did I get so old?

This must be my unlucky streak...

Just took possession of a brand-new STI GP6C on Monday. Started cleaning it today, and immediately noticed rust on the outside of the slide. Brand-new gun, WTF??? The rust cleaned off with a few squirts of G96 CLP, but I can see some tiny pitting. For some reason, the inside of the slide was protected with what seems to be regular oil that wiped off easily, not long-term preservative stuff you normally get to clean off a brand-new gun. The top of the slide was totally dry, not a trace of lubricant or protectant of any kind. The extractor looks rusty, too - and that rust doesn't come off.

I gave it as thorough cleaning & lube as I could, and will probably just learn to live with it... The slide shouldn't rust anymore, I'll give it the extra attention it needs. I just don't understand why it would be so tough to protect a brand-new gun properly.
