Came across a 1907 bayonet which has a lot of surface rust after some flooding. Looking for some advice on clearing the rust off without damaging the metal, one side is a lot of orange rust, the rest seems more of a darker and spotty oxidization. Thanks for any replies.

Remove grips and let it soak in diesel oil for a few days. After rub with 0000 steel or brass wool. Use a copper or brass scraper to removed raised pitting.

Evaporust will turn the metal gray and remove any patina, take your time and it can be very surprising how much original finish can be preserved.

JP has suggested the right approach. If you don't have a purpose-made brass scraper you can make one by flattening the mouth of a piece of rifle or pistol brass.

Old guys use oil and a copper penny, not one of the new age zinc ones, to get rid of raised rust build up.

Some others will leave it as "patina".....

I'm not one for leaving a mound of rust on a gun, but some guys are.

I suggest using Evaporust, but as soon as you soak it for a time, rinse it in water, pat it dry. I've done so for some really rusted firearms parts before and works great, I find that grey "parkerization" stuff only occurs if you leave the substance on, the idea is to pull it out and wash under water asap.
