Rusted sks

take it right down for proper cleaning, then get the grinder wire wheel on all that rust. I bought one like that for $25 for part's. Shoot's great now!

Once I had a friend who thought I was full of it when I told him about corrosive ammo.
We shot all day and he used a few patches of oil and called it a day.

About three months later the thing (which had gone unused) had rusted shut.
I broke it down and soaked it and pounded it out.

I also took a brush and attached to a drill and ran it through the the now tunnel-o-rust of a gas tube. Re-oiled and it shoots fine to this day.

Here's what I had to deal with recently. Not to diss the previous owner, not even for a second! But simply to show what corrosive ammo can do. Gun was cleaned after shooting, but chamber was probably not flushed properly with hot water, and not oiled / greased for long term storage (2 years, give or take).

After using de-rusting solution and a regular bronze brush, chamber still shows pitting, and is oversize (unfired round does wiggle in there).

If anyone says corrosive ammo is a myth...

wow, I thought mine was bad after left in the safe for 3 months. One question, can you confirm if this one has a chromed chamber or bore ? I just cannot tell from the pictures

This one had me wondering. Receiver cover shows 1952. Bore is good. So... begs the question. Are chromed bores only chromed for the rifled portion of the barrel or is chrome supposed to cover the chamber as well? Me thinks not.

Nope. Rust in the gas tube, but piston was decent. Bore is good. I was expecting the firing pin to be terrible, but it turned out to be quite ok; bolt body, extractor were reasonably good as well.

Yea the chambers are not chromed from what I understand and read aannd now see, wow what a shame, steaming hot water ( takes and extra 3 minutes) then a normal cleaning!

The rifle I am talking about has rusted barrel also.

Rusted barrel can be a whole different story, depending on how bad it is and if it`s pitted.I`ve seen barrels pitted so bad ,it looked like sandpaper and would catch and fray the patches when passed through.

I`m not sure at what point a badly pitted barrel becomes unsafe, but I had an old Mill. Czech Mauser in 8mm that was so badly pitted, it would probably have stopped the bullet as it went through the barrel........pretty bad.

It became a parts gun ,and that was a bloody shame.(I got it from an old fellow for 50 bucks)
