Rusty bore in my Mosin - learn from my lesson.

Took her out today and hammered 40 rounds down the pipe. The first group was about 5" at 100 yards. I was impressed. As the shots progressed it became more erratic and spread out. I brought it home and gave it a good cleaning and the rusty rifling near the muzzle is gone. There is very little rifling now left at the muzzle but the pitting is still there.

I bought this rifle from a dealer. I wouldn't expect anyone on the forum would sell a rifle like this without a warning to the buyer. My point is to check the rifle over ASAP and don't assume that it was good - like i did. At this point the dealer offered to take the rifle back. So that is good so far.....................?

I realize all military rifles don't have good bores. The first one I bought was a 303 Brit over 35 years ago from my Boy Scout Leader for $25.00. If this rifle was the last Mosin on earth I would live with it. On the other hand why would anyone pay for something substandard when for the same money (or less) you can still get one that is better and have it for when it is the last one on earth? I realize everyone has different standards in life and what they are willing to pay for.

Thanks folks.

I will only say that certain dealers are more "thorough" than others!
Personally, I would only buy from reputable sellers with excellent reputations. These sellers usually fully describe their product, INCLUDING the condition of the bore.
I won't name them, but if you search around the forum, you will find at least 3 of them.

Some dealers are more thorough than others for sure. I can say I have dealt with a lot of excellent dealers on this forum and they have treated me well. I have spent a lot of money with them and will continue to do so (most).

I just got stung by a dealer on this forum who specializes in Eastern Block surplus. I am telling you be careful. They like to say customer satisfaction but those are just words. I will not be spending any more money with them.

Good luck.
