I just took my reloading gear out of the attic (stored for a couple of years) and much to my dismay my press has some rust on it (shaft, exposed threads etc) as do some of the other parts that were not sealed up. I have never used an oil on it (put some lube on it though). I was gonna clean it off with a plastic brillo but what should i use for lube/protector?

Just use some oil and some 0000 steel wool on the rusty spots and then wipe it down with a rag or paper towel and you should be good to go.

.... "Bearcat" has the right solution ! I had to deal with "rust" when my wife and I were living ( literally ) on the water ! ..... David K. ....:)

Any oil is better than no oil. I use a 3 in 1 oil for coating surfaces of anything metal I want to keep. Even motor oil will do in a pinch. Whatever you have lying around.... leave the vegetable oil for cooking though. :)

I bought this Spray stuff its for storage of guns, I used Steel wool to get the rust off and then sprayed all my dies, metal parts of my presses, dies etc. I had them in storage for 2 years now, I check them every month and no more rust on it. I'm just waiting for the garage to be cleaned out so I can setup my presses on my work bench.

Use the WD40 as a lubricant for rubbing with the 0000 steel wool to get the rust off. When you are finished, wipe clean and apply machine oil or the "gun spray stuff" IMHO
