Rutting Bucks

Does the meat from a rutting buck have a stronger flavour?

We dont have much a choice here in NS. Rifle season pretty much corresponds to the rut. I spose if a fella wanted to do yet another course and pay the gov't another 6 bucks for the priveledge of carrying a bow, you could get pre-rut bucks. But I just refuse to give the gov't anymore money.

WTF?

I think its all in your head.

Like quite a few others, I've eaten early bucks that have tasted strong. I wouldnt mark that up as saying early bucks taste strong though.

I've had strong tasting bucks at all times of the season but some of best tasting ones have been in fact during the rut and this one last year tasted good although he was very chewy. That was because it was most likely his last winter.

Well, taking a squirt all day all over the place and yourself for a couple of weeks I dare say may add to the broussy taste of a rutty buck.

Nice to be able to smell them before they can smell you though :D

Do you actually eat the hide?

This is way too irrelevant to the flavour. If the outside mess getting into the flavour, you've contaminated the meat yourself.

How does piss and semen get into the meat from the hair? Only the hunter can be responsible for that.

I dont think so, I've gotten a big 10 pointer last year right in the peak of the rut (he was actually chasing a doe at the time too) and he's been one of the best tasting deer I've gotten.

I'm no expert... but I thought the flavour of the game came from what they actually ate?

yes that maybe true, but a rutting buck has so many hormones surging through his body, they have a tendency to influence the taste, as well rutted up bucks are beaten up, bruised and very klean, as they use all their fat preserves when rutting(no time to eat) :D
