S.A. military ammo

Target shooting yes, hunting no. From my experience with SA .308 it shoots like smashed a$$ as far as consistency and accuracy are concerned. If you are blasting targets its alright.

SA isn't the greatest. I've had better luck with the Portugese stuff, I'm told Hirtzenburger ammo was the best as far as 7.62 NATO is concerned. Good luck finding some.

I have launched IVI / SA and Port. out of my 308-700P the port Is always under 1" @ 100 , the other two are of the shotgun pattern

Correct

I have measured the bullet seating depths and the s/a is like belt ammo compared to the others - d/a is the best - ivi - quebec screwed it up when the lieberals gave everything to them, although there was an improvement for a while when thay were taught what to do . And now s/a is up to 70 cents a round - outragious - my fave is the portuguese fnm - a little hot but accurate -like it better than the square head stuff -- did find some imi (Israeli) stuff about 25 years ago that was equal to lake city match - cant remember the lot #'s tho

It seems my experience with SA .308 ball runs contrary to the herd... Out of my Rem 700 heavy barrel, it shoots about 1.25 MOA out to 300 yards. Perhaps not match-winning performance, but plenty good for practice (and not having to reload it = more practice time).

sa measures badly

m 14's. - bolt's are much different - m14's very sensitive to different milspec - they love 168's. :)

Just spent the evening miking norinco siver box - old stuff - measured way better than wolf -- surprise surprise - :dancingbanana:

Why would you hunt with Military surplus ammo? Surplus ammo is the most likely to fail to fire when it counts the most.

If you're spending that much time hiking to your prey, why not use a cartridge that costs .50 cents more but you KNOW will go bang?

That's an odd line of reasoning...

I've had way more duds with commercial ammo, and I have yet to have a FTF with surplus ammo. Unless it looks questionable, or comes from a questionable country or dealer, it should be good to go.

Not for hunting though... FMJ and all that.

Some, I say again, some ranges won't let you shoot milsurp ball. The idiots who think shooting it is about emptying the mag as fast as possible have damaged range facilities in some places. Otherwise it's just ammo.
Oh and the Portugese ammo is good NATO spec stuff.
"...not match-winning performance..." Depends on the match. 1.25" at 300 is phenominal accuracy with any ammo. Especially milsurp ball. It's not made for that kind of accuracy.

I was out at the range on friday and was dinging the gong at 300m all day with my SA surplus.

I have also pulled some bullets, and put some 150 barnes TSX in their place. haven't tested for accuracy yet.

I also want to test an idea. If I were to take a ball bullet, cut the tip off about 1mm from the top, and drill down with a drill bit, creating a homemade hollowpoint, do you guys think it would open up? I know it's easier to buy proper hunting bullets, but it would be fun to test out on some ballistic gelatin.
