I also want to test an idea. If I were to take a ball bullet, cut the tip off about 1mm from the top, and drill down with a drill bit, creating a homemade hollowpoint, do you guys think it would open up? I know it's easier to buy proper hunting bullets, but it would be fun to test out on some ballistic gelatin.
This is the original dum-dum bullet. Take a milsurp FMJ, cut the tip off, and you and your enfield rifle go hunting lions in Africa.
One problem: since FMJs were made by inserting the lead core into the jacket from the rear, the tip is what held the bullet together. By cutting it off, you have created a situation where a lead core is held in an open guilding metal tube by friction. Firing the bullet may cause the core to fly down range, leaving a jacket in the bore. Or, the bullet may fly as whole, but separate on impact, achieving minimal penetration.
Either way, it's lions 1, dum-dums nothing.
