Getting a new 338 lapua built and trying to figure out what scope to put on it, a Schmidt bender or a night force or any other recommendations?
Thanks

Got more money ? S&B !

Got less money ? Night Force !

Id just get a NF of your choosing, Maybe a new BEAST ... Nice NXS - 250 , I think the NF will do everything the S&B will for quite a bit less. I will always buy NF , They are badass , Ive got 2 and love them both. Ill be looking at a MARCH next before a S&B. Purely on personal preference. I would expect and deserve to be fully chasidised if I Knocked S&B , They are top shelf product.

Summery

Id just go NF , But If you have the extra $ and you don't care ... S&B. S&B glass is probably a little better , NF might be a more rugged scope. One thing I know for sure is a .338 Lapua will not break a NF. Not saying it will break an S&B either

Your kinda trying to spilt hairs here

I preference S&B , to my eyes it's night and day in lower light situations . How ever my buddy swears his NF is just as good as my scope . Every ones eyes are slightly different . Spending this sort of money on a scope I highly suggest looking threw both if you can. You won't be disappointed with either but it's better to know then left wondering .

The majority of SB are FFP standard while almost all the NF are SFP. With the exception of the few, 3 I beleive , models that are FFP.
FWIW, the BEAST retails for the same as a SB.

S&B is way up there, heard got things about NF and Deon March, i got one of each on order, i will be able to make my own assesement about all of them, but if you get only one, S&B is the reference... JP.

Schmidt & Benders 2014 pricing will have a lot of people looking for alternatives. If FFP is not that important to you buy the Nightforce NXS or ATACR and be happy. If you want a FFP scope then to my mind the S&B is the Benchmark. That said I think there are excellent alternatives at better prices.

Dont have it yet but the Deon March 3X24X42 FFP FMA-2 look like it could be a contender, what i really like is the weight, the lenght and the reticle, and the price is right, looking forward to get it... JP.

Ya good point ... S&B sort of is where everyone measures up to

I can talk about high end glass all day everyday lol ... Im saying this because I do , they are my favorite threads lol

Tactical Imports handles Hensoldts and are listed for much the same $ as NF AND the S&B's, depending on model even less than them... (in my own opinion, a Hensoldt is a touch above a schmidt.. in Europe guys swear by Hensoldt, like so-very-many swear by Schmidt on this side of the pond... it's a #1 vs #1 sorta thing between them) I've personally got one 4-16 Henny and wouldn't trade it for gold. Have talked to many S&B guys that do admit the Hensoldt has an edge.. personal thing in the end

(I realize it isn't on your list, but is definitely "one more" worth considering*) Definitely won't hurt a Henny with 338L

Having 2 S&B PMII's, a NF ATACR and a NSX I prefer the PMII's. At the 2013 prices the S&B were selling used for $2600-3000. This was the way to go for high end optics IMO. However with the 2014 prices at $4K new and apparently $3600 used the ATACR is looking really good at $2600ish new. Plus I'm really liking the ATACR, the glass is great, the turrets are good (not S&B great but good) and they have 120MOA of elevation travel with makes them a great option for a ELR setup (I have mine on a 338LM).

In a month or two I will be looking for another high end optic, it's looking like a ATACR, March or S&B PMII if a deal pops up.

FWIW I find the ATACR in a whole new league than the NXS, there no comparison really.

I have three NF and two S+B and IMO I think you will find NF to be excellent and wont be disappointed but, if you want the very best, my recommendation is to go S+B. I have reviewed a March and, while it was very good indeed, I actually was expecting better for the price.

I like this post , interesting thanks. Im sort of in the market for possibly a couple scopes again. IM getting a March 2.5-25x42 for hunting then I might look into the ATACR for a lapua if I get carried away

By the end of the year, i should get the right picture on high end optics, had from before a S&B, added up 2 others S&B, ordered a Nightforce and a March FFP, a Hensdolt 6X24 FFP will be on order in a few days, may get a HD5 and i am impatientelly waiting for the new Elcan Specter 1X3X9, as soon it show up to one of my dealers.... I will order up... Sure i wont get a Premier or a USO this year, but i think i will have a pretty good idea of the order, i will rank them.... JP.

what he says. ATACR is far and above the NXS.i did not however get to look through any S&B scopes at the time to compare them. the 120 min of elevation was the big seller for me. prices will be going up as out $ is down. im happy I bought one when I did

Cant wait to compare a S&B to a March side by side, according to reviews for what it's worthed the March really give a run for the money to the S&B... This is gonna be very interresting... JP.

Judging by all the posts in this thread, you can't buy the wrong scope. You really are at the top of the range. Guys trust their life to all of them, and to be honest, I don't think you could find many situations where a guy lost his life, because he was using NF instead of XY or Z. They are that good. NF may be the most rugged, and able to handle the most 50 rounds of any. German Glass is clearer than Japanese glass, but at this level its splitting hairs.

Decide what you are going to use them for? Will you be shooting a ton at dusk and dawn? Will you be having difficulty resolving your target? Are you willing to pay an extra 1K in some cases for slightly better glass and a couple other features?
