S.I.R. M91/30, good? hmm?

Hi there,
I was looking at this M91/30 at SIR,
Although there's a typo with the caliber (7.62X39, whatever, not important)
Are these ok?
190 or so seems pretty good.

Last time I was there they looked very nice. I was thinking of getting one but I had to wait for payday. I went back last week (or two weeks ago) and they were out of stock. Wood was very nice. Barrel end wasn't counterbored. I actually had a cartridge with me that I stuck into the end of the barrel and the bullet only went in half way. So I assume the barrel was ok. Rifling seemed good but needed a swabbing. I plan to check out the next stock when it gets in.
 
I bought one about a year and a half ago from them for $145.99, accessories included and was very pleased. It was not counterbored, and while the barrel showed some signs of use it was definitely not dark. It had Century importer's marks. Now I just need an opportunity to fire it!

hows shipping with them?
and ordering?
is the process rather straight foreward and can I pay with VISA/EMT something not snail mail related?

The PU scope mount (the one from WWII or the Kalinka one that's the same..)
are they Specifically designed for Hexagon or Octagon receivers?

I've always just looked for Hexagons as I thought I noted that that was "the thing to use" with scope mounts, ..

could you clarify this for me?

is it reasonable to assume that when it doesnt say octagon and doesnt say hexagon, its cylindrical?

You don't have to use a repro PU mount, repro PE mounts are also available, and have the advantage that you can use a much wider and better range of scopes. The repro Russian PU scopes leave a lot to be desired, and the originals are no better.

I am going to install one on my Finn

I'm going for a sort of replica thing here so I think I'll go with the PU.

Shipping from SIR to Toronto costs around $25 per rifle and they do a good job of packaging them. You can pay over the phone with VISA....I never tried EMT so I don't know how that would work with them. A plus for those of us living in Ontario is that we also save on the PST.

My rifle included the accessory pack like the ones that come with the Tradeex rifles, though with the price having changed ($5 cheaper) I'd ask them when phoning just to be sure (you might be directed to the gunshop).

Mine came with a hexagonal reciever, though I don't know if that was the norm. You'll likely have to ask the gunshop staff to find out about the current batch. I don't find them quite as friendly/helpful as the staff at the orders desk, but at least they are there.....

The PU mount goes on the round high-wall receiver. PE mounts and scopes sound all nice and everything, but consider that the mount an scope starts at close to $700 US and you may change your mind.

As for a Finn copy, the Finns made their own unique base and mount that loosely copied the PE and had much different markings. Also, your scope won;t be properly engrved with Finnish markings. It would stand out easily as a fake and sine the original rifles are unobtainium, you'd have to alter a proper and collectible M39 to make one.

Repro mounts sell for a lot less than that, take a look on evilbay.

I am not concerned about markings, but if I were I would mark them myself.
 
Spencer, I said mount AND scope. Good luck findin a PE Mount/scope combo for "a lot less than that" ;)

A quick serch on the bay show most PE mounts selling for $199 USD. with c. $25 shipping charges. Some are selling for less, but are live auctions, not "buy it now" items. Who knows what price they'll end at, but I'm guessing $150+.

I only see one PE scope on there. It's $675 by itself.

If you are talking about mounting any old modern scope on a $200 repro base, I would suggest you will actually be taking an M39 that currently sells for something like $350-500 in Canada and turning it into a $100 deer rifle with a $200 scope base on it.

Bear in mind also, that they are 26mm rings and MAY not snugly fit after-market scopes very well. Also bear in mind that you need special screws with taper-based heads to mount those PE receiver mounts. The screws are sold separately and add to the cost.

I am not in the least bothered what my rifles are worth, I don't buy them as investments, I get them to use.

I would not want a WW2 scope, the optics and function are crap. I will use a nice quality scope that will suit the rifle, probably a Kollmorgen that I already have. As for the mount I have seen them sell on evil bay for under $100. 26mm rings are not a problem with 1" scopes, I have a 1" tubed scope on my M44 with a PU mount that has 26mm rings, all that is needed is a shim. As for the screws I can easily make my own. The complete set up with a high quality scope will cost me under $200. The mount and B&L scopechief for my M44 set me back $110.
