How are people finding the accuracy of the S&J barrels? I am looking at the 16.5" for a new upper, but want to work more towards the precision end of things rather than CQB.

Any experiences, assistance welcome.

Thanks,
Mark

Not yet.

I got a 16.5" sitting here. Came in last week from OTS. The bore looks great. Headspace seems perfect with the LMT Enhanced bolt I got from Questar. Had no problem mounting a clamp on gas block on it.

There were some scratches on the external finish, which makes me wonder, but as long as it's just a cosmetic issue, I'll be happy.

But, haven't shot it yet. Still waiting on the rest of my rifle parts to come in, and an ATT for that matter.

Just too look at it, it seems well made and worth the price. I'm proud that it is Canadian.

From what I've read, I don't know if you'd want something with a carbine gas system for precision shooting, at least that's the impression I got. Depends on what kind of precision you're going for. I think for the price, it's worth a try.

Does Simon make these barrels? If not where do they come from?
On a side note, I haven't heard anything bad about them, still no one is willing and/or able to step up and show what theirs can do?

I am not looking for 0.5MOA precision, just a noticeable step up from the typical rack grade AR's like the Norc, Stag and others in the lower end price range. The carbine gas system shouldn't be an issue for that and I will be reloading to suit the gun and my uses.

As I'm a big fan of telling the truth even if its costs me money or friends, I will say this.
Our barrels are just standard cut rifling. They are a great little barrle and we have sold. About 1000 of them.
If your looking for match grade this this product as it stands today. Is not for you.
They all shoot well but if match or semi match you are looking for then. Have dlask, ATR or tac ord make one fore you.
we ready to pay $400-$800. + install.
We will have a line of match barrels. Coming out for the spring.
When we started making these our plan was to be able to provide a cost effective short AR bbl to the canadian market with a finish better then anything on the market.
We have always had plans to run match grade bbl but this was a longer term plan.
As for issue with our products so far out of the 977 units made we have had 3 bbls extensions come loose and 2 units that would not shoot worth a damm.
We do our very best to get the very best product to market at a price that's fair.
As our products are 1oo% canadian or us made and not from china or "elsewhere" we are proud to sell them to our customers.

Thanks for that, BBB. I think I will need to pony up for a match barrel to get what I want for this rifle. I appreciate your honesty and will definitely be back when I need more parts/accessories.

I dont' understand why you'd want to go precision and 16.5" together?

In hindsight, I simply should have had a precision barrel made in the length I wanted for service conditions, but, managed to get rather lucky with my 18" NEA barrel. Had I had a barrel made, I'd have paid more, but, probably had it much faster, and not had all the headache.

I'd definitely get it longer though, in a contour that meets your weight requirements.

Cry once buy once right?

There was a thread a while back about a barrel extension coming loose on an S&J barrel. Hopefully it was an isolated incident as BBB said.

Here's the link to the thread.

That was my barrel and i contacted S&J and Simon was exalent on helping me out took that barrel back sent me a new one and paid my shipping both ways.

and i had no problems with the new barrel.

Why longer?

16.5" is a nice length that allows you to take it to the US, and lets you send 5.56 about as far as is practical IMO.

All true, but, not consistent with a precision build, even for this caliber and platform...

I'm rather impressed with the performance my rifle is capable of at 500 yes, but, if I could get a little extra speed out of the heavy bullets, I'd get better wind drift numbers.

I just think if he's after precision, he's better off having a barrel made to his specifications. That was my lesson learned. Ironically I already knew that from the bolt gun side of things, but, got caught up in the hype over here....

There is SFA difference between a 16.5" barrel and an 18" barrel until you get way out there. As I said, I am not looking for 0.5MOA, just a step up from the standard rack grade barrels.

Exactly. I want a US legal rifle that will work for carbine courses and get me out to 400-500yds without shooting patterns.

Precision and 16.5" are two factors that fall into the DMR category from what I've been reading. Maybe the OP was thinking of this kind of build?

That would be a fair description, yes.
