I just wanted to write a quick positive note/review of the S&J no jam follower accessory for the 870. I have a Grizzly 12.5, and replaced the stock yellow flimsy plastic follower with a Brownell's green aluminum one (080-000-175). I've taken it to the range a few times and cycled my all metal snap caps through it, and noticed that unless I was really forceful with racking the slide, I would often get a double feed from the mag tube and jam the receiver. Initially I chalked it up to being the gun, as it was inexpensive, and people bash them on the forums here fairly often. I resigned myself to consciously being aggressive with the slide.

Today in the shop I saw some of these followers, and decided I'd pick one up. After a bit of filing to get the follower past the tube dimples on my Grizzly, it slid right in. I tried a few of the snap caps, and low and behold, I could slowly rack the slide, and no double feeds! Perfect and inexpensive add-on that completely changed my experience with my gun.

if you take it apart and remove spring does follower move by its own weight or is it stuck where the spring has pushed it ? (pointing muzzle down and up) :confused:
 
My Rem works fine with a Brownell's aluminum follower and A-zoom snap caps no matter how slow I run it, but those snap caps differ enough in spec that I'd never substitute them for real shells when it comes to checking for function.

The S&J moves freely, the aluminum one I had would bind at the unloaded position without a little push. I think it was due to some scratches on it that made a slightly jagged edge that must have caught the tube a little.

My Rem works fine with a Brownell's aluminum follower and A-zoom snap caps no matter how slow I run it, but those snap caps differ enough in spec that I'd never substitute them for real shells when it comes to checking for function.

I'm not knocking the aluminum follower, it just wasn't working for me. Perhaps the tolerances are slightly different between the DA Grizzly and bona fide 870, enough to cause my issue (I'm sure the scratched edge didn't help). I completely agree that I need to try real shells before I'm 100%, but I'm not going to do that at home, so until I'm at the range next it will need to do.

How did it get scratched? I'd give the inside of the inside of the mag tube a good look as there could well be some kind of debris or defect in there that caused your old follower to hang and might well chew up your new one.
 
Sorry to go against the grain but in 20k+ rounds and through plenty of abuse I have yet to have any follower fail. Even the cheap chinese ones. For $12 though I grabbed 2 S&J:D.
 
I too am yet to see a stock follower fail...........
And yes I have s&j followers in two of my three pump 12's.
 
I have yet to see any component fail on any of shotguns and I run them hard, but my stock follower on my most used gun was getting pretty beat up, and I find loading easier than it ever was with an aftermarket follower.
