Hey all.

I've got a question for those of you with No4 Enfields who are using an S&K scope mount. What kind of eye relief do you guys get with your scopes? I've got a Redfield revolution 2-7x33 mounted with Burris Zee rings as far forward as I can get it. To start getting a full view out of the scope, I need to move my head back at least 3 inches from where it would be with irons. Is this par for the course, or is there a way to get it farther forward?

Thanks Thomas

i've got a No5 Mk1 wearing S&K mount and the eye relief works well with my 3-9x40 mounted as far forward in the rings as i can. This particular scope is supposed to be 6" eye relief but works great.

The S&K mount is kind of short IMHO. Look at pics of the Armalon mount and Fulton mount. (both from England)

Both actually hang right over the receiver ring...a whole lot longer than any of the other ones on the market.

Thus you can mount a big, long scope and have it further forward.

Unfortunately though, both mounts are pretty expensive.

A cheaper way out is the B Square mount, which is also sold under other names as well. It is considerably longer and pretty solidly mounted, although made out of very light material.

It does allow use of an Enfield Mk II rear peep sight and it's pretty low.

There is no other mount I'm aware of other than Armalon or Fulton that hangs so far forward and has such a long rail.

Issues with it:

1) I had to shim on both sides of the mount at the rear where the pin goes though.
2) I replaced provided pin & c-clips with high grade allen bolt and nylok nut
3) I did not like the wrong thread allen key bolt provided to replace the ejector screw. I used the screw from a PH5C sight instead. You can cadge one from a buttplate too.
4) It's made in China.

Another newer mounting option is the Canadian made Addley Precision mount. The maker is now present on this forum and his products are on ebay. The mount is into Generation 3.

Well I can't believe that no one else in the milsurps part of this forum has a scoped Enfield. Thanks for your input cantom. I have seen the Addley Precision mounts. When I ordered my S&K it was a coin toss between it and the Addley. You can probably guess which one won the toss.

I have an S&K on my longbranch AG Parker regulated target rifle. It works well but I had to fiddle with the scope position to get the right relief. I'd still like to put a cheek riser on as it sits way to high and I almost have to rest my chin on the butt.

Other then that it seems rock solid, my scope has held it's zero for several hundred rounds.

I bought the mount just to try out a scoped rifle. I think I may put the PH5C back on and buy another no4 to put the scope and mount on.

Since we seem to have your attention there Mr. Addley, perhaps you can tell us whether or not that No.1 MkIII rail mount requires any gunsmithing? I might be curious....

I have a S&K on a No4 with a Bushnell 10X and eye relief is very good. I bought the mount on the recommendation of the gunsmith that owns the shop I deal with. It has held accuracy with no problems.

Looks like it sells with a drill bit and a tap:

Sorry about the teeny pix - they show a drill and a hole being tapped.

Aaack! Too bad. Looks like S&K will still be the best option for my SMLE sporter. Everything but the fore end is original, but WWI Australian wood seems to be as rare as unicorns.

The Armalon or Fulton are better, but cost about 5 times more than a B Square. (maybe even more including postage from the UK)

You can see the difference a much longer projection forward makes for long scope mounting and getting the right eye relief. That is my beef with the othewise excellent S&K.
