S & K Mount question.

I received my M1917 S&K weaver mount today so I figured I would go out and buy some rings to mount my Leupold 1.5-5 Mk4. Well, the weird thing is, none of the rings I tried seemed to fit the base because it was too wide for the rings. Every set of rings I tried ended up sitting on the base canted to one side.

I tried Burris Z-rings, Leupold QRW and some cheapo Weaver rings and all of them were too skinny for the base. They did however fit perfectly on some picatinny rails on a gun in the store so I'm kind of confused as to what the problem is.

This is the product in question:

Oh, my!

S&K make their bases for TWO different sizes of rings: everybody else's.... and their own.

Sounds as if you may need the actual S&K rings.

There should be a note in the package or something on the box to indicate the type of rings. I know that if you get them for standard Weaver-size rings, it's on the box.

Once you get everything up and running, I KNOW you'll love the thing!

Hope this helps.

I was looking up the dimensions for weaver/picatinny rail here http://www.biggerhammer.net/picatinny/ and then measured the width of my rail. My rail measures 0.8645" across while the dimensions listed on biggerhammer state 0.835".

I also checked to see if perhaps I ordered the wrong base from Brownells and I have part # 1270 which corresponds to a weaver base as stated on the S & K website. I'm stumped.

Standard Weaver rings WILL ride up on one side if the BOLT does not set down firmly in the slot across the Base.

Try moving it back and forth and see if it will set DOWN square and solid.

You have a fair bit of latitude if you back off the adjustment screw, let the CLIP go almost free and settle it down.

Alternately, you might remove the Clip entirely, get the rings to sit solid and then re-attach the clip and the screw cap to the ring.

Thirty thou is all you are out. It's not a lot: about the width of the letter t in this type.

Good luck!

I did make a point of loosening the clamping screws as far as they could go or completely removing them. I also ensured that the locking bar of each ring was in its respective groove.

So far, I've tried 3 sets of rings at WSS and 2 pairs of my own - the closest to fitting was my pair of Burris XTR rings but the rings still appear to be canted. My Leupold Mk4 rings and a pair of Burris Z rings couldn't open up wide enough to fit the mount. Perhaps I will take some pictures tomorrow to illustrate what I mean.
