S&W 1911 vs. Sig P220 or Glock 21?

I'm just about ready to purchase a .45 Auto handgun and was looking at either the Glock 21 or the Sig P220. The local dealer told me that I should take a serious look at the S&W 1911. My question is, is the S&W as reliable, sturdy, accurate and built with the same quality and attention to detail and the Glock and Sig? Seems like a tried and tested design that's been around for ages but I'd like to get some opinions on it. Thx!

S&W gov't models are excellent pistols, but comparing them to the Glock 21 and Sig P220 is like comparing apples and kumquats. I personally find SA pistols to be my favorite. A couple of observations of mine...Sig pistols are outstanding, compact, accurate and reliable. I have considered buying a Glock 21 several times...til I pick one up...if you have very large hands, fine...but if you don't have mutant mitts, the Glock runs a close second to a Deagle in grip size.:p
You really need to decide if you want a D/A, S/A or "safe action" pistol...:)

Here's the model I'm looking at :)

There all very good guns but If you have Big hands go with the Glock 21 it fits like a glove ;) I love mine to death

I have the basic stainless SW 1911 and will never part with it. I am just a plinker, but it digests any ammo and is deadly accurate. Quality is vastly superior to the Colt 1991A1 I sold to finance the SW 1911. I have little interest in DA autos, so the Glock or Sig are not of interest to me. My other auto is a mint Inglis Browning HP 9mm, which satisfies my need for a military semiauto. I like the look of an Army Colt 1911A1, but the SW 1911 is a far better and more accurate pistol for me.

I like my SW1911 a great deal. After getting it my SIG 226R didn't get much range time and eventually a new home was found for it. Nothing against the SIG, they are great pistols but my SW1911 is everything that I've ever wanted in a pistol.

I handled a couple (inc the one you posted a pic. of) pretty decent :). IMO if it's a .45 it should be a 1911...

btw there are SW1911s with alluminium/alloy frames...

I'd go with the S&W or the Sig. The Glock is a great platform for a pistol but even with my big hands I find the Model 21 just a tad too big. Maybe it's because most of my .45 shooting has been done off 1911 platforms for years...;)

That SW1911 is very ###y. I also agree that if you are buying a 45 it should be a 1911. What this guy did to his Glock is pretty amazing though if you haven't seen it before. Tough gun

I'd say get a chance to try them out. There have to be people on the board in your area with Sigs, Glocks and 1911s. Then you can see the differences.

Personally I like the single action 1911. The double action works well for some people, but if you're going to develop some skill with a firearm then the 1911 will out perform the others.

I love my P220, and I doubt anything but a seriously tricked out 1911 will out-perform them. I also think everyone should have at least one 1911. For a first time 1911, I'd look no further than Kimber....

First question I'd ask is what are you going to do with it ?
what do you expect it to do for you ?
These are very different guns .
I have a Glock 21 , had a 1911 , The next one will be a 1911 style .
I'll be changing over due to different IPSC classes , no other reason .
Personally the Glock fits me , its simple stupid and absolutely reliable .
I do love the look of a 1911 though , some of the newer ones are dead ###y .

S&W 1911 all the way!

Or as I would put it...........
A '70 Challenger to a couple Honda Civics

I have hands that should be on an ape, size 12, and I have owned both the Sig P220 and the Glock 21. I still have the G21 and the P220 is long gone; the G21 remains a source of pleasure. Why? The G21 does everything the P220 can do at a lower price. Other than the Sig P228 I am no fan of Sig Sauer, I find them over priced and over rated. This is my opinion. Regards, Richard :D

You can even use a G21 for CCW:

S&w .45

A buddy of mine put 15 000 round in his S&W 1911 in 11 months and it still shoots nicely. It's not as tight as it was when new, but still shoots great.

I agree with the other guys, you do need big hands for the Glock 21. As for the Sig, if you like Traditionnal double action pistols, you will not make a mistake getting one of those. Sig's are sweet shooting machines.
