I don't see much discussion of S&W 1911 pistols.
The only comments I have heard is "Buy Colt for a 1911
and S&W for revolvers."

Who has a S&W 1911 and what do you think of it?

I have owned a couple of S&W 1911s and liked them very much. S&W makes a very good 1911. They don't have the "cool factor" of some other brands, but you will be very hard pressed to find an honest negative comment about S&W's 1911s. And S&W always takes care of their customers.

You may hear some people ##### about S&W's use of an external extractor in their 1911s. But again, try to find a report of anyone who has actually had problems with theirs. S&W has been using external extractors for decades and knows how to build them.

For the money, I don't think you can get a better shooting, more reliable 1911. Just my 2 cents, of course. YMMV

For reference, check out the S&W forums on M1911.org and 1911forum.com

I don't have one but I have read some reviews on them.
They have a very good reputation. As Krausb has said, some people do not like the external extractor but they work well. Just a matter of opinion really.

My opinion only though.

I have bought used SW 1911 two months ago. 800 rounds fired so far: no problems. The best group I had in club competition with self-loaded ammo (10 rounds in one-hand shooting at 25m) was 5 inch and 5 of them were touching each other.
However, trigger is heavy compare to STI and Kimber.
In my opinion this gun is the best 1911 in $1000 price range.

smith goood ahhhhhhhhhhhh

I have owned a smith 1911 for the past 14 months and love it. I have a kimber warrior and the smith 1911. I feel comfortable shooting both and would not part with my smith. The gun was had 2000 rds through it and not one malfunction or hicup. It chews up factory and reloads without complaints. The smith is smooth and accurate and feels good in my hand, shooting strong hand or weak. Buy one and enjoy.

if I could afford it, it would be the first 1911 I would buy, very nice guns. And I much prefer the external extractor....all my 1911 woes center around this part.....:( The sig 1911 is very nice as well, I consider both of these superior to kimber, springfield and para

how much do they go for? and who sells/stocks them?

I recently purchased a S&W 1911 PD Tactical rail series. I have not had the chance to take it to the range yet, but I really like the fit and finish. It also has all the "custom" options that I was looking for. I paid
1250$ for it at a local dealer. Anyone who sells restricted firearms in your area should be able to get one for you.
