Have any of you bought or shot a smith 1911? I would like to buy a 1911 this calendar year, and have been eyeballing them. Have also been considering an STI.

Bought a S&W Doug Koenig edition in April. I am still stoked over my purchase. I am by no means a 1911 expert as that was my first 1911 purchase, but it is a beautiful gun and a pleasure to shoot.

One thing I might add. I made a boo boo at the range this fall. I had a couple of first time shooters with me so I had a few pistols in various calibres for them to try. Well I was busy yapping when I was reloading some mags and I loaded my .45 mag with .40 S&W rounds.

I fired the first one and it actually made the paper, but the brass swelled really tight and I had a heck of a time getting that .40 brass out. I was a bit embarrassed, but the pistol is no worse for ware. I was very fortunate, but having had that happen makes me wonder if I had instead been using a lesser quality 1911, would I have ruined my gun.

I had a railed smith and wesson 1911. It was great and I would recommend it highly. The finish is amazing and it is accurate as hell.

I have a S&W 1911 PD in the 4 1/4 barrel, love it and it is a great shooter, but the screws set into the wood grips seem to back out from time to time, not a big deal and a small fix I'm sure, also it doesn't like the win clean flat nose ammo so I use fmj and no problem !!w:h:R:d:

Bought a S&W 1911. Nothing but problems right out of the box! Took it in under warranty and NEVER saw it again! 9 months latter the gun store gave me a full credit and I bought a Kimber 1911-flawless out of the box! Guess I got the S&W made on a payday Friday on cheap beer and wing night at the strip bar next door to the factory!

here a video with the guy alot of people like to hate.

+1 on hickok45, I find there is too much ego in the nutnfancy videos which is distracting.

S&W has some 1911 models that look appealing, but they have two significant problems:

1. The external extractor sits too high in the slide. Due to tolerance stack, some guns will develop functioning problems after around 5,000 rounds or so that aren't easily fixed by replacing the extractor.

2. The grip safety actuated firing pin block is prone to timing issues and isn't easy to remove.

I call BS on number #2! Shake the frame during take down and it falls right out!

Haven't owned one. Haven't fired one. Have handled them though. IMHO, S&W has done a good job with their venture into the 1911 market.

That said, it's my own personal opinion though, I don't care for the firing pin block safey they [like so many others who have a 1911 offering] have put in them.

NAA.

Bought a S&W 1911 9mm Pro Series and love it. Extremely accurate (IPSC target Alpha zone hits from 25 metres), reliable but a tad expensive ($1600).
