S&W 22A Feedback

I don't own one but I "rented" the one from the commercial range I shot at all winter. Put around 1000 rounds through it over the course of a lot of visits. I used it as a "cost extender" by shooting a magazine or two of .22 between magazines of 9mm. It soon became a regular fixture sitting by my 9mm at all my sessions.

It did suffer from about one stovepipe every two or three magazines but this was due to it being a range pig that has had literally 10's of thousands of rounds put through it in it's time. On the days I got it where it had been cleaned recently it did fine. On the days where it felt a little "sticky" to me it had a jam about every other magazine. Sometimes a bit more often to being almost once per magazine. But keep in mind that the gun FELT dirty and the slide lazy to move at these times. I've since found that it takes quite a bit of fouling to make a gun actually feel like it's gummed up in this way. Clean them about every 500 and they always feel fine. So all in all to be fair to the 22A I'm convinced that if you take normal care of it then it will do just fine.

As for accuracy it was easily far better than I could hold it.

One thing I liked about it was that it was a light framed gun. So it provided far more of a feeling of shooting a gun than the Rugers that the range also had did. It was high on my list for my first .22 pistol but in the end I opted to spend a bunch more money and get the Tanfoglio. I later picked up a used S&W 422. If by some chance you can find one of those used it is also a very sweet shooting pistol that loves a wide variety of high velocity ammo. But if you want new then I doubt you'll be dissappointed at all.

I owned one for a while and loved it...

Big framed gun that fit my hands perfectly. Never had a functional problem, easy to clean and take apart. I had a little red dot sight mounted on it and it was very accurate.

I bought it because it fit my hands a lot better then a Mark III, Neos or P22...

Ill post a pic when I get home from work tonight for you...

Oh, along that line that Merlin mentioned I liked it because the grip angle mimiced the one on my CZ. So no oddball angles to confuse the muscle memory. If you DO end up going with a Ruger I'd suggest a 22/45 just for this reason over the rather Luger like Mk II and III style grip angle. Mind you the grip angle isn't a biggie unless you're using it for competition practice to ready your quick sight acquisition for IPSC or similar duties.

I like the grip angle, as well. Very nice to hold.
The Weaver mount was a plus for me as I wanted to add a red dot sight.

Haven't had an unintentional mag release and the central location is convenient for my left-handed daughter.

All in all, a great little gun.

Here is the one I had and how I set it up. I loved it as a trainer..

I never had any issue with the mag release either with the rented 22A or with my 422. But I suppose it's possible. If it turns out to be an issue I'm pretty sure a slightly stronger spring for the release would cure the issue.
