Well, I finally made my mind up between a 8 3/8" 27-2 and this gun. I actually went back and forth on this decision all day. I would have loved to buy both but hey, a classic case of "too many guns, too little money" ;)
It's funny that there were none around and then all of a sudden there were two offered to me at the same time. This 6" actually turned out to be a little bit less than the longer barreled model. I believe the serial number (N446729) dates it to around '77 or 78

This is my first 27....company for my K-38 and my 586 :) Now maybe a 19 should be next? (once the gun fund recovers)








 
very nice. are the chambers counterbored for the case rims? I have one that is identical and it's a sweet shooting revolver. I prefer them to pythons.

Yep, that vintage (27-2) is pinned and recessed

Interested in your comment about Pythons.....I was just offered a nice 95% Python at almost 3 times what I paid for this 27. I guess it is all about what the market decides in terms of price.

Edit. No disrespect to the owner of the Python. His price was probably fair market value

The 27-2 is fast becoming not only my favorite N-frame, but my favorite .357 as well. This is out of a 586 Classic, a 66 Combat Magnum, a 19, a GP100...

I think I've found "My" Smith. I don't go in for the concept of buying duplicates, but I might just buy another classic 27 down the road.

The only thing that could maybe match it, I speculate, would be something like a 5" 586.

No urge to try any of the modern versions of it, since I do not like round butt guns, and my favorite grips do not come in a round to square conversion
 
I'm still a little conflicted about choosing this over the 8 3/8" barreled one I was also offered. Like Mark II I'm not a fan of buying duplicates but if the long barreled gun was still available in a month or so I could be tempted.

Getting back to the question of Pythons and value.... With this purchase I've got an amount just about equal to the average asking price of a blued Python tied up in this 27-2, a 4 screw K-38 Masterpiece, a 586 no dash and my 4.5" 9mm Alfa proj......makes you think.
 
Never much attention to Pythons before, but now it seem they are growing on me, a couple of nice ones on the EE... Who knows what this caramel guy will do... JP.;)

Yeah, I keep being tempted but then the practical and frugal Scottish side of me takes over and I pull back. One of these times.......
 
I like the 8 3/8 model too. it would be my choice but it is all personal preference. Overall I'd say keep the 27-2 and k-38, sell the 586 and Agfa and save for the Python. Best of all worlds and a sweat revolver collection.

The 8 3/8" is still quite well balanced, though all considerations aside, for a side by side comparison I give the edge to the 6"

I 100% agree!
The 2.5-4" K frames and the 6" N frames are, in my mind, the most beautiful examples of a DA revolver ever made.
Pythons are pretty but the cylinder latch design on Colts and the heavy DA pull of the Pythons I've shot just make them a distant second to these Smiths. Pythons would be older Ferraris ( along with all the problems associated with them), S&Ws would be Cadillacs and Rugers would be Chevy.
