I just bought the pistol off the EE, and new to smiths, anyhow it has something shaking inside it, and it sounds like ####,, the seller said there is a thread on it here, but I could not find it. Anyone know if this is normal and if so what is it?

My Mod 28 is only allowed to make noice when I am shooting it...and that's how it should be...
A S&W revolver which rattles when you shake it is not acceptable!

Is it something in the grip area making noise? Mine did that too. Not sure what it is/was, right now it's in Gunnar's capable hands :)

Is the rattling definitely coming from the internals of the gun? Most S&W revolvers' rear sight blade rattle and it's not performance/accuracy affecting.

Same here. My 29 and 686 all did the same thing from day one. I'm not sure what it is but it is kind of annonying especially for a brand new gun. It doesn't appear to affect the performance of the guns though.

Take the side plate off, 4 screws, and take a look if there is anything broken.
My 686 is tight, no racket, I'm sure I could pound nails with it.
Google the dissasembly for picture reference.

Ive seen this same topic come up on the smith and wesson forum. Its evidently quite common for this rattle to be present and is due to the trigger stop rod rattling around in the rebound slide. Some guns rattle and others dont and if it really bothers you ,putting a bit of grease on the spring will cure it,(but that means dissassembling the gun, probably not something you should do unless you really have to).Another possible "cure",is to hold the gun muzzle up,and drop some oil down at the back of the trigger, this should run into the rebound slide.

If you gun is otherwise functional, just leave well alone and certainly dont start taking off the side plate for an otherwise non existent problem

That is what I would prefer to do, I started to remove the side plate, and forgot to use my proper screw drivers,, and ####ed the head.... so now I need a new screw.. damit. your discription sound the best, as sometimes I can hear something like a ball sliding down a pin and hitting the bottom when I hold the gun muzzle up.. I'm a freak with sounds that come from a manly thing like a solid 357 mod 28 chunk of steel. I will try the oil but I fail to understand how that will stop what ever it is moving from moving...

It doesn't stop it from moving, it simply lubricates the netal which makes the movement quieter, ergo you don't hear the rattle. Grease will actually stop it, at least until that wears away. Due to differences in design and tolerances, some revolvers rattle a bit, some don't. If you would like me to look at it next time I'm in AB, let me know. - dan
