Hello all
Can anyone tell why I am having a hard time purchasing a s&w 357 with 4inch barrel. I have been told if it was not grandfathered to me that I might as wellforget about the gun. I have asked a couple of people about it and all they say is that you can not purchase it but now one gives me an explanation. thanks

Would you like it in Braille? You've been given the correct information by the people you've asked.

Unless you owned a handgun with a 105mm or shorter barrel before 1995(?) than you never will. These guns are now prohibited, and only grandfathered owners can possess those in Canada. No new 105mm or shorter barreled handguns can be imported for civilian sale.

There is only one loophole, in that a gun made before 1945 might be inherited. The only remaining option to purchase a prohibited gun is to remove the condition that's making it a prohib. In the case of a 4 inch S&W, the only option is to find a factory 4 1/4 inch or greater barrel, or make one.

Read the gun laws ()
A little tale regarding 12/6 and not knowing the rules:
A few years a go a friend of mine who is not 12/6 ( grandfathered)
bought a 4" stainless S-W from a #### head dealer at a gun show.
The transfer was approved for some reason?????
and few weeks later , he gets The letter in the mail saying that as
he is not 12/6 ,he has to get rid of the gun, and he says that he bought it
and it is his etc- etc, this went on for a year and one day the local
mountie comes to me and tell me to go get the pistol as tomorrow
he has to go and sieze it. So we had the barrel redone to 4 1/2" and
the gun reclassed to rest. by RCMP lab.
Cost more than what it was worth, but he WAS NOT GOING TO GIVE IT UP:cool: Everthing was fine and he tells me that couple of days ago the barrel blow up:eek: I havn't seen it yet , he said it was factory ammo -???
After all that, bottom line you are screwed, to bad as I just
got a nice 4" 586 in , kind like it , may have to shoot it some this summer:)

If you're thinking that these laws don't make sense, you're right! I owned (and can prove it with government issued paperwork) a few 12.6 handguns when I was 19 - 29 years old, guess what? Now that I'm 40 I can't own any short barrelled handguns (same goes for 12.4 - 12.5 rifles) When you're looking at gun law in Canada it's important to remember that if something makes no sense at all then you're doing it right. The more pointless and redundant your actions are, and the more moronic you feel doing it, then the closer to legally correct you are.
