S&W 41 woes - anyone else having extractor issues?

I have a very nice 1997 vintage S&W model 41 .22 RF pistol. It has broken two extractors in less than 2,000 rounds. I've checked the chamber, and the slide and everything looks to be ok. What is strange is that the surface of the break (right at the claw) appears crystaline - like what would be expected of a break in cast or powdered iron material. Has anyone else experienced an excess of broken extractors? I'm wondering if there could be heat-treat issues that leave the part brittle. TIA.

I did a search on the bullseye archive http://groups.google.com/group/Bullseye-L-Archive for Model 41 extractor issues and came up pretty much blank -- they do break now and again, but nothing of significance from what I can see. Since the bullseye group has a good sampling of Model 41 users, I don't think the problem you're having is common. It's a target pistol that has been around for a long time and very well understood. Other than a well-deserved reputation for being finicky with standard velocity ammunition, it's a respectable basic level target pistol. Maybe you've just had some bad luck?

A crystal like surface could well indicate improper heat treating. I have heard that md 41's have had extractor issues, look for a good aftermarket one.

Same thing happen to my Model 41. It was practically brand new and fired less than 1000 rounds. The warranty was still in effect.

My 41 wouldn't extract a live cartide. I was disappointed in the gun which I felt was very inferior to my Browning which I swapped for it.
