I have come into possession of a Smith and Wesson New Century revolver in .455 caliber. It has a 7 1/2" barrel and is in excellent condition. It is very difficult to find the ammunition. Can I shoot any other more popular round in the gun safely? Puppy.

455 Webly, 455 Ely, 455 Colt (NOT 45 Colt) can all be fired in this revolver. None are common, nor easy to find. Modifying the gun for a common caliber will destroy the collector value. Hornady makes brass, so if you handload you're all set. If not, Fiochhi still makes ammo, but be prepared for sticker shock. Were I you, I'd start handloading. - dan

Fiocchi loads .455 ammo but it is about $55 per 50 box if you can find it. [Edit.... you are in Victoria, B.C. then Pullen's gunshop out on Millstream Road has the Fiocchi ammo for it, as well as Lee .455 dies [you can also use standard .45ACP dies].

If you can pick up some Dominion marked .455 Colt brass you can load it yourself using .45ACP dies and 250 gr .45 LC lead bullets sized to .454.....

Don't alter it to fire anything else.

I'm betting it has a 6 1/2" barrel, though, too.... ;)

Does it look like this [minus the grip adaptor]:
