S&W 460 or 500

I haven't shot either, but availabilty of ammo will be much easier with the 460v, you can shoot 45LC, 454 casull and 460 s&w. If you don't reload the 500s&w costs money to buy, then keeps on costing and costing.......

The 460 is flexible as it can handle 3 different calibers. I'm not sure about the 500. I've found this handy when I can't seem to find one particular caliber in stock. I've run 460 and .454 Casull through it. Have not tried .45 Colt yet.

I one hand it no problem. I've heard that it's a pussycat compared to 500 though.

Hope this helps some.

Never shot the 500 but I felt that it was pushing the limit for accuracy when fired for defense (bears not humans) so in a hurry and multiple shots.
I settled on the 460 because of the range of ammo (I was using a 454 Redhawk already and comfortable with that caliber) and the 5" barrel for ease of carrying. I can shoot accurate enough in all three ammo choices and it is nice to carry around and draw if needed.
The down side is that you do need to get used to the 460 load as in a 5" barrel it is a flame thrower and has a good kick (I do not one hand it but I guess I am a pussy) and the cost and availability of ammo is a bit of a pain. I have not looked lately for ammo but when I did, it took me awhile to find some so it might be more available now (bought all I could find at the time) and it costs about a $2 a shoot in 460 when I bought my ammo although that could have come down.
Hopes this helps but in the end you just need to grab the one that calls your name! :D

Nope that answers my question well enough. I was chasing the 460 before, but there has been alot of hype over the .500 and I wasn't up on it so had to toss the question out there. I guess Im going to go for the .460V. Thanks guys, just gotta call my gun guy now and make it so.

Get both! Ammo is available in Edmonton no problem.

I have a 500 with the long barrel, its expensive to shoot but doesn't really kick to bad. I find it very accurate.

That 5in .460 looks great! IMO .500 isn't very prectical considring it's a big gme hunting revolver and we can't hunt with handgun. At east with .460 you can shoot .45colt and .454...

I'd consider .454 Raging Bull as well, they make them with 5in barrels we well..
