S&w 500

I love mine. Its my 200 yard gong gun:p I shoot 440gr gas check with 39gr of W296. A real pussy cat, now I can hardly hold my excitement for my new FA 83 in 500 Wyoming Express to get here.

Man, you could hunt big foot with that cannon. The more I think about it the more I want one even it is just to explode watermelons. Thanks for all the input fellas.

Nice video, whats with the nasally voices? Wonder if S&W will make a 600 someday?

Probably not; it would likely be classified as a destructive device under US law, which requires a $200 transfer tax and paperwork, much like a silencer or machine gun.

I have had this cannon for almost a year now.

Satain graciously let myself and a friend of mine try his 500. On the way home from the range, all we kept talking about was that gun. It left us grinning for a long time.

Satain, thanks again for letting me keep the brass from that shot, it's sitting in my top desk drawer at work and I pull it out from time to time as a "show and tell" item:)

I think they're a riot to shoot...recoil isn't bad but the factory grips leave a bit to be desired.
Ben Hunchak is casting some nice 500gr GC for the 500 S&W.
Speaking of show and tell,I was building some 500's when a buddy stopped in.He wouldn't leave without a dummy round in his hand...just bullet and brass...like a little kid he was...

Satain, that video provides an interesting insight into the birth of the modern revolver, thanks.
I can't take the credit for finding that vid. As it belong's to justins1877 sending me the link and I just had to post it for all you 500 lover's to see.
On thing that I found verry interesting was the fact that they double screw the barrel and the fact that 1 guy get's to shoot 500's all day long and get paid for it.

I had no intention of ever getting one, that is until I tried out one a shooting buddy of mine picked up at a gun show in Duncan a few years back. He invited me out for a test shoot using some 'moderate' loads devised by another local guy that also has a 500 S&W. The loads were with a cast 440gr GC bullet and Unique for a velocity of about 1000 f/sec. My target at 25 yds, shot from a rest was one big ragged hole about 1 1/4" in diameter. NOW, I needed one!!

And this is it, nicknamed The "Hummer". To begin with, I found with the original front sight, I couldn't get it to shoot low enough and after sending a letter to S&W, they sent 'us' three higher front sights and that cured the problem.

The other issue I've experienced with it is the recoil when using the heavier bullets in hot loads. I agree with BrotherRockeye's take on it and feel the rubber Hogue grips it comes with leaves a lot to be desired. In the hump area of the grip frame, the rubber is very thin and offers little in the way of protection from recoil. As pictured, I modified a set of Jordon Trooper stocks by Herritt's, made for my N-frame and that has made it bareable. Serves to spread the pain over a bigger area I guess.

Using cast bullets from 350gr PB - 440gr GC and jacketed from a 'modified' 325gr Speer HP to the Sierra 400gr FP, accuracy was great with any light or heavy loads I've put through it. For me, accuracy did seem to drop off a little using the 500gr Hornady. I've attached a few samples of accuracy results I've obtained.

It is a 'handful' that has the ability to inflict pain at both ends but it can sure shoot.

Holy Cr@p Batman!
I don't even think I could shoot groups like that even if I put a scope on it.
Nice shooting partner.
;)

:)Thanks. A lot of load testing help there from a good selection of bean bags and a piece of dryer felt from a paper machine. There is a guy in the Duncan club that impressed the hell out of me with what he could do, two handed and standing on his 'hinde legs' shooting at a steel Ram @ 200 yds. 1st one went just over, the 2nd just under and put the next three into it:eek::cool:.

As I mentioned previously, just about anything I run through it shoots well. I've finally got hold of some Sierra 400grJSP's that I've wanted to test and for the first loads tried, they also do well. Here's a scan of my 1st 'kick at the cat' using them.
