s&w 5906 106mm barrel...worth it

I purchased a 5906 prohib in box with papers and 5 mags for around $450 and had it re barrelled to restricted.The cost for paperwork,shipping and barrel came to another $400. Well worth it to me anyhow.Sweet gun for the money.The 200. and 300. dollar pistols are most likely US Police trade-ins.Some might be well used and others near new.
It only took me 2 years to find one of the 4.25" factory barrels S&W made for the 3904/3906. I'm trying to forget what that cost. I'm not sure if these fit the 59- series, I don't have one because I find the 59's too fat. The single stack 39s make nice cloverleaf groups for me. I should have bought that 3906 a while back, but the 3904 I have is plenty nice. It was about $400, is prohibited, and minty.
I like the idea of factory barrels, but if your barrel maker (I presume Barry) does his job, the pistol will be better than most shooters. My 39-s keep up with any of the SIG P226s I have shot it with, including the Elite, and all but one of my HKs.

To some degree it depends on what 106mm barrel is in it. We imported and sold quite a few 5906's with BarSto barrels that were made for us... those were premium guns and the barrels were top notch... great shooters. If the barrel is one of those BarSto units then that's not a bad price.
The other question is the sights... most wanted fixed sights (not adjustable) and in fact the adjustable sight models were no where near as desireable or popular for a variety of reasons.
If the condition is good... the gun is fixed sights and the barrel is BarSto then $900 is a fair price. Keep in mind that BarSto won't make the barrels anymore.

The average S&W 5906 is both larger and heavier than and has a trigger that is inferior to most contemporary service pistol options; most 5906 pistols are also equipped with a magazine disconnector. Twelve years ago when my 5906 had developed occasional Failures To Extract and I'd contacted S&W about a replacement extractor, I was told by the S&W customer service representative that my (non-Tactical) 5906 was an "old model and it might not be supported anymore"; that was twelve years ago. Eventually, a few months later, a replacement extractor (for a 5904) arrived. With all that considered, do you really want to go there?
Unless you specifically want a 5906 to, say...round out your S&W collection, or for some other well-considered reason, your money would be better spent elsewhere.

I wouldn't pay $900.00 for a rebarrelled S&W 5906.I've had a couple of them over the years ( yes I am 12-6 licenced) and I was never too thrilled with their performance. Their triggers are very sloppy, accuracy just so-so. If I had $900.00 to spend on a 9mm I'd much rather buy a good used CZ 75 and have money left over for ammo.

Maybe not the best 9mm ever made,but pretty close.I have the 5906 and 3906 and find them both ultra reliable.Accurracy good to excellent depending on the day.Not really much in production today that exceeds the quality of the 3rd Generation Smiths for the money.There are some that would disagree, but also many that would share my opinion.

I am not sure I would pay $900, but then again I have a 12(6) so I have bought many 3rd Gen Smiths for half that price. As for quality they are top notch, well made,reliable, accurate and good support. I have shot thousands of rounds throughout the years, with different (Smith 3rd Gen) models and a variety of different factory ammo as well as reloads. I can't remember any failure from any of them. My most accurate was a 4506 45ACP, sold it (big mistake) a 6904 and 3914, both very accurate. The smaller Smiths seem to be more accurate than their bigger brother the 5904 or 5906, that is my experience as well as others that I have read on the net. Having said that, I wouldn't pass up on decent 5906, especially one with adj. sights, I love those sights on that model. as well as the 4506. If you have never shot a Smith with the double/single action I think it would be a good idea to shoot one and see how it feels for you. Like Mark from Questar said, one with the Bar Sto barrel is worth the extra increase in price. If you really, really, like the gun and don't have a 12(6) then it's really up to you.

Pretty much sums it up for me, too.
A $125 vintage single stack Star Model B in 9mm shot circles around any double stack S&W I ever owned. From the 59, to the 459, to the 5904 etc series. And I've owned a few different S&W pistols over the years, too.

The attraction to the stainless steel S&W autos is what it is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we all have preferences and dislikes. Not sure what it is about these pistols but they are just out and out cool. I have two 5906 with a 5" and a 6" barrels that make a CZ 75 look like a Norinco on the range. Mind you they are Performance Center jobs and not the standard issue 4" so the comparison is not fair.
Missed the 12-6 by a hair and have had to live with that for some time. In any case, a 59 series with a new made restricted barrel is better in my safe than wallowing in a sea of ambiguity.

I have the M&P Pro in 9mm and love it. The M&P grip is close to the old 59 series so all is good.
