I bought this used. It is the first model, but appears to be almost unused.

Last night I shot it for the first time. A very nice shooting gun. But part way through the first box, the cylinder release fell off. The screw sheared off.

I can see that the screw stub is in some kind of a slider inside the gun. I am wondering how difficult it will be to get the screw stub out. I wonder if the screw goes all the way through the piece it is in so that it can be grabbed and scewed out from the othe side?

This is a nice and valuable handgun, so it will have to go to a pro.

That's a serious bummer! I looked through Sweeney's Gunsmithing Pistols & Revolvers but there's no info on disassembly of the cylinder latch, and I'm too chicken to strip mine to check:p (although I did do some disaasembly to do internal polishing when I got it.)

However, Brownell's has an exploded diagramme: (add "www.") brownells.com/.aspx/pid=0/sid=626/schematicsdetail/N_Frame_625
which clearly shows the cylinder latch parts.

You might be able to get the old screw out with an extractor - or maybe even by using a sharp pin punch and a small hammer to rotate it - but getting the $5.00 replacement:

could take a while. Anyone know who handles S&W repairs in Canada? You could ask S&W if they'd send you one but it's probably restricted by The Powers That Be south of the border. :(

I phoned S&W in USA. Part in the mail. It needs the slider bar inside the gun. The screw is actually a stud in the bar. The only part i can save is the stainless slotted cap on the stud. have not yet tried to get it off broken stud. I ordered one of those, too.

S&W told me gun was born Nov 29, 1989 - so I guess waranty is over....
 
There is a tool called "Put a head on it" that is designed precisely for this type of thing. I don't have any other info on it but check out some hardware stores and have a look at it.
 
betcha a nickel that if you send it to him it gets warrantteed. Betcha a coffee even!

And yes, he did great work with my 625 as well. Firing pin was a little short from the factory, and while he was in there, he gave the action a minor slick up gratis.

Excellent service from S&W. I guess little parts like that don't fall under the ITAR export restrictions.

Just took the cap of the broken screw. Came off, easily.

This is a sweet shooting revolver. Like my 4" M29, it shoots small groups.

I am using the plastic moonclips. Work perfectly, and can be loaded/unloaded by hand.

Round nose or round shoulder bullets load more easlily than Semi wad cutters that tend to hang up more on the case mouth.
