S&W 629 4.2'' .44magnum

I was on the fence between the rosewood or the pau ferro. I ordered the pau ferro, plus picked up a set of round to square mono to give a try. How do they compare, size wise, to the factory set?

if your talking about the rubber grips, they are much better then the smith stock ones for sure. Fits more solidly, and are bigger.

I guess I can add my opinion on the stock grips. They suck.

GunGuy34, did your original grips also have slop in them? No matter how tight I tightened the grips there was wiggle room; as in, you could rapidly twist your wrist (while holding the revolver) and hear "knocking" of the frame inside the stock grips.
I would say that based on this, S&W expects owners to replace the grips. Yes, they are that bad.

Yes they did have slop, they are junk, why i replaced them. Smith just cheaped out with those grips trying to save money.

I believe ya brother, just didnt think it would be that fast, lucky you wish i was in Edmonton, mine will be shipped next week, gun looks like a bulldog for sure.

If you go to P&D and let them know you're from out of town and leaving same day they will let the CFO know and they can usually get it done real quick. I usually go grab a coffee and by the time I get back its ready to go, complete with ATT. P&D is the standard by which I judge other retailers.

Finally got my 4.2" 629 s&w from ellewood epps! It's a sweet addition to my smith collection! Just need nicer grips.

untill i recieve my rosewood hogues I will have to deal with the cheap plastic ones. Only one problem thought, when I took the original grips off and re-installed them the nut striped out. superglued the nut back in and should be in buisness for the range!

How do you like the 460's grip? My 629, even at 5" with the same grip as your 686, because the rubber grip is not rigid, I find the recoil is delivered through the narrow frame directly into the web between my thumb and finger - not comfortable so I'd like to find a wrap-around style like on the 460. Even with the sloppy grip on your 629 (my 686 has it), you might find it more comfortable than that on your 686. Good grip, crappy grip, pfft... they are beautifully formed and gracefully curved pieces of stainless steel: The hourglass in firearms! And accurate! If it matters to you, change the front sight with red insert for a target post: I find in some light, the angle reflects/red obscures the tiny black tip. My 686 still wears the stock sight, but the 629 came with a sight kit, and wears a black post which is easier in most lighting to aim.

I Like the grips on the 460 but I haven't shot the 629 yet so I won't condemn them yet! I've order a set of hogue finger groove wood grips anyway for the 629! The grips on the 686 are ok but I find them too thin so my end up replacing them someday!

It is puzzling why S&W did that: Why produce a 686 4.2" with full underlug, but not a 629 despite considerably heavier recoil?

Not really. It was by demand if you ask me. It seemed the majority didnt want the full underlug. That way it was more inline with the mountain revolvers made by smith, even Elmer Keiths gun didnt have a full underlug. It was a 4 inch bbl. Its more of the classic look, and the closest we can get in Canada due to our barrel length restrictions.

This is similar to Elmer Keiths gun: Sorry John i stole your photos.

Here's my 4"

With fairly recently acquired 'Keith' holster by Milt Sparks plus factory S&W ivory grips.

This is a mountain gun:

I dont think recoil is the issue lol. They make 3 inch 44 mags.

So seeing as we couldnt own any of the really cool guns, the 629 with 4.2 inch barrel is the closest we can get. At least for the majority of us that dont have prohib status.

I just did a rough photoshop with a full-underlug. Not bad, I'd have bought one in either config.
Both look equally nice, with the partial having more character whereas the full looks very ordinary.

I dont think i would have bought one with full underlug. For the sake of an inch, i would have kept my 5 inch 629. I wanted that classic look.
