This is a 629-3 around the the front of the cylinder you can notice to me what looks like a liner and some pretty bad pitting around that liner... is this normal... or something to be worried about? Before you ask no its not lead build up you can put the tip of a toothpick in the area in question.

Actually to the eye it looks alright but when you magnify this picture its rough around the top which I guess it matches up to the markings on the cylinder.

I purchased it a local gun store a few years back... I dont know any history...when we got it I fired 100 200 Grain Remington factory loads thru it and we where suprised on how big the fireball coming out the end was... then it fired alot of bullseye light lead loads and maybe a 100 240 grain jacketed loaded with lil'gun loaded within the specs they provide with that powder

I bought a second one from epps thru the mail and its not got any of these markings... I fired both my lead loads and hotter jacketed 240 holopoint with lil'gun thru my new one didnt get any of these marks either yet.

End shake I am assumeing means if you grab the cylinder and wiggle it does it have lots of play... the answer is no its pretty tight. Just as good as the newer 629-6 I got a few month ago.

I'll take a picture of the underside of the topstrap.

Looks like the forcing cone on my 686. Except that my cone is worn on the right side and outside edge , not at the top ant inner edge like yours. Also I dont have any pitting on my cylinder
My gun is still at worthner gun work in repair I dont think they had time to look a it so far so I dont what was wrong with it.
You should ask SILVERCORE he is a Member here and gave me great tips , only problem was that my gun was already in the mail so I could not check anyhting.

good luck and let us know what was the problem and how was fix

I'd diagnose the effects as too much cylinder to forcing cone gap, if is under 6 thou its ok, over is bad news. Since it is not evenly distributed, I'd check to see if top and bottom measurements are the same, looks like it is not square. Is there pitting or gas cutting on the top strap. Dr J

I am guessing there is no warrenty for this kind of stuff... what happens if I do nothing and keep shooting it as is? How much do you think it will cost to fix?

Yup, looks like it needs a barrel set back, trimming up square and recut of the forcing cone.
Dr J

I would also check to see if the cylinder face was cut straight and squared.

Would you do more damage? No I think you wouldn't do any more damage if you shoot reg loads out of it.
