S&W 63 as a first revolver?

Good little revolvers. I find J frame triggers need more work then K, L or N guns, but with a change of springs and a little work they turn out pretty good. - dan

Nothing wrong with the 63, it is a small J frame though. IMO, the DA and SA feel leaves a lot to be desired. That was my experience with the Models 18 and 48.
The J frames are meant as kit guns or pocket guns, IIRC. So they were designed small and lighter, also for smaller hands. But then smaller hands will have trouble with the DA trigger pull. My wife needed two fingers for that.
The 617 with its medium K frame and old school action using leaf mainspring, delivers way better trigger pulls out of the box, and a simple DIY change to Wolff springs will give even more satisfying triggers. And should you desire to shoot 38/357, the 617 is a nice training revolver for the K and L frames inasmuchas trigger action, grip size and weight are similar.

I have one of the new Model 63's with a 5" barrel, and 8 round cylinder that I got from Epps last summer. I have owned a large number of S&W's almost all 29's-629's and all but 2 from the Performance Centre. I was impressed to say the least, the fit is excellent, shows some buffing marks in the stainless, no more than most non PC guns would show, has recessed muzzle. Has very good fully adj. sights, the d/a trigger pull is around 10-11 lbs, but the s/a pull is about 2.5-3lbs and very smooth, target type hammer and smooth trigger. It is very accurate, Coke cans offhand at 50m dont stand a chance, don't know when I have had a firearm I liked more.
