This may have been discussed already, but I can't find the thread.

Does anyone know for a fact:

I've seen new 686s advertised on a few canadian websites as having 4.15 inch barrels and suspect that they are the 4" model that has been remeasured by a verifier at the more accurate 4.15".

This has some exciting implications for anyone out there trying to sell a "prohib" 4" S&W, as it may be possible to have it verified as being 4.15 and therefore, restricted only. That would certainly open up the market for those guns and likely increase their value on the Canadian market.

I've also seen some 4.2" (http://www.wanstallsonline.com/double-action/) which S&W doesn't list on their website, is this a "special canadian version"?

Any truth to this? Any dealers out there know?

I have one of the 107mm Factory made 686s. There is no trickery here they have a 107mm Factory Barrel on them. Nothing done by a verifier or anything like that.

There are some older nominally 4" S&Ws out there that have been verified as having a barrel length longer than 105mm due to manufacturing variance. Most of them are 12(6), though.

The new ones have been specifically made up for the Canadian market.

yep, special canadian version, but i have only saw the 4.2"686 and longer not 4.15".
I have recently bought a new 2012 586-8Shot show specially made for the canadian markt witch has a 4.15" factory Barrel.
cant say if there all made this way, and they only call it a 4", so not to confuse our american brothers and sisters .
it would just be silly to call it a 4.15" Barrel in the usa.
I only call it a 4.15" Barrel myself, just to assure myself and others that it is not a prohib.
In private it is a 4 inch .

Just out of interest, after reading your original post about your 586, I contacted S&W about their regular 4"/10.2cm barrel lengths (forgetting that yours was a special edition version for the Canadian market) and just got this reply:

Every revolver is going to be different because they are handbuilt guns. The interpretation your local law enforcement makes on the length of a barrel that physically, in front of their face, measures 105mm is up to them and only them. Unfortunately, I’m not sure anything I say will have any difference on their decision to allow or disallow the 586 for your ownership.

thanks Josquin.
for making such a request.
Glad to have helped sparked the ambition.
Its exactly the response i would expect from them .
its perfect marketing actually ...when they say special canadian edition though eh!!!!!.
Its what id do, regardless of irregularities.
Living on a international border with the usa, has sure made it awear to me that canadian government, especially LAW ENFORCEMENT, has alwase been favoring to smith and wesson.
Even more so with the rather huge procurement to Canadain border Patrol.
at least in my city, all have the not so new anymore M&P.
But everything in this post is still entirely speculation.

I thought the CBSA were armed (well, those that have been armed so far) with the Beretta PX4 Storm?
But of course the RCMP have the S&W 5946 (only made for them now, I believe) and up to 1994 they had S&W .38 Specials (can't remember the model.)

No joke, I still have the correspondence where I e-mailed Smith & Wesson and suggested they make guns with 4.2" barrels. The reply was that it was forwarded to management for review.
You're welcome. :D

my local at least ,are M&Ps .
happend to be in my local gun shop when one of the shipments arrived.
supprised me even more, that they went there to begin with ,
red tape thing mostley .for some reason they had go to the gun shop first .
i dont think cbsa could take imediate possetion for some reason.
