Hey guys, between these 2 s&w 686's which would you pick? The older version has no MIM parts and a few other things that most people see as better than the newer ones but I definitely like the shorter barrel better. Which would you pick?

Since you're not going to be carrying this gun, I'd go for the older style 6" barrel. A little more weight and balance to fight recoil, and a longer sighting radius to increase accuracy,

I'll never know why S&W doesn't just produce single models with a 5" barrel on _all_ their calibers. Everybody loves 5" revolvers, when they can get them...

The 6 inch model will be easier to shoot and will handle recoil better. The 4.2 inch model looks neater. I have both and like them both for different reasons.

I'd pick the 4.2"

-Less front-heavy
-Better suited to action shooting and/or drills that involve drawing from a holster
-Looks better

Buying an older 6" 686 and shortening the barrel is another option.

The 686-3 is known as the best 686 of all time, it has a hammer mount fire-pin and no mim parts, I didn't really mind about mim parts as long as it is a Smith but the older machineing is exceptional smooth.
