I just got a brand new 686 and I understand there is a trick to taking off the Hogue rubber grips after undoing the bottom screw. Something about prying slightly at a particular spot. Any advice? Also is it a big deal to unscrew the cylinder latch release so I can clean and polish in that area?
Thanks,
Mike

You pull the grip downwards (there is a groove in the grip for the retaining rollpin to go into.

You shouldn't need to remove the thumb latch (I have 7 Smith's and none have been polished) to clean. Just use brake cleaner (in a well ventilated area) and drop some oil in afterwards.

I own a Smith&Wesson 629 Calssic .44 Mag stainless with Houge rubber grips, and yes...removing the grips to polish is a good idea. I used a special stainless polish on my baby, and its so bloody shinny you can use it as a mirror.

You dont have to remove the cylinder release button but I did, its easier to get to, and you dont want excess polish to get into the mechanism....only oil.

Polish your 686 several times by hand in circular motions the buff it with a super soft cloth, and that MOFO will shine like a flash-bang :)
