j/k. I don't know enough about them to offer any advice, all I do know is that there are a few differant models out there, and 6 or 7 shot cylinders.
I bought mine on an impulse just wanting a .357...and it's my favorite of all of my guns to this day. Absolutely love it. .38s are nice and cheap to shoot too.
I'd buy a new one, I don't know how the quality differs. Mine is about 10 years old, and flawless. To have bought a new one, I would have only paid a couple hundred more, and to be perfectly honest, when I cross paths with another that's brand new....it's mine

I have a M28 (N frame 357), and I love it. I was looking for a 686, but this came along and I could not pass it up.
I have to tkae a different opinion to Fonix on the new versus used; I would say buy a used one. Unless soembody has been shooting a pile of heavy loads through it, a 686 should be in good shape. To add to the top of this, S&W has been putting the internal lock on their new guns which are having mixed reviews; I personally have not used one with the lock so this is all second hand info. Also, a couple hundred dollars can buy an awfull lot of practice ammo; if you keep your eyes open you can sometimes snap them up for a greater savings than that.

I bought a new one 18 years ago and it is still going strong - I have never had to replace a single part and have no idea how many thousand rounds I have put through it other than it is over 20,000 (99% of which was mid level .38's with lead bullets).
I got a used 586 (black, not stainless finish) w/6" barrel from a fellow CGN'er.
I only shoot .357mag out because I love the recoil. I wouldn't get a different revolver. Some guys like the shorter barrels for looks, but not me. The Ruger GP100 got a good long look before I got this one but I'm happy I went S&W.

the older 686s have a recall on them(a minor replacement is required)......if you buy one they will honor the recall

I know what you mean. I shoot mostly mild lead loads ~800 fps, but I have some FBI +P loads I like a lot too.
Seldom go to the range without firing at least a few hot 125 grainers, just to remind me of what this caliber is all about.
From 7 yds, very rapid fire (double action) I've had 5 of 7 rounds touching. Can't come close to that with my autos.

I got mine second hand at The Shooting Edge in Calgary. I've seen a few come and go over the past few months. They had a VERY nice collecter edition with a nice case a while ago that was scooped up by an employee before I saw it come in

.... I bought mine, new, when they first came out. (It's one of the US Customs Dept. "overruns" with the 3" barrel) .... the first ones needed to have the firing pin hole "bushed" .... covered by factory warranty. It's a nice compromise for a 357/38 revolver, IE size vs weight, 'can't go wrong, with either a decent used, or a new one ! ..... David K. .....

I've had one for over 10 years. I will never sell it! Mine has the 6" barrel. I like the way it sits in my hand and holds on targer. It just works, it has never done anything it shouldn't. All I do is clean it and that's easy given the unblued finish. You can shoot .38 spec target loads all day or shoot hot .357 magnum loads without problems.

I have a 586 (no dash) with 8-3/8" barrel and a 4" 586-1 as well. The 4" is probably my favorite revolver. I had the hammer nose bushing mod done to the 8-3/8" , but haven't had it done to the -1. I haven't had any problems with it either though. All -2's and above do not need the mod.
