I want to chamfer the chamber mouths of my S&W M66-5 to facilitate speed loading. I've read various comments re: leaving the extractor star alone to better support cases and having the ejector star chamfered as well. Comments .... ?

Is this something I can do myself or should I have it done by a 'smith like Charlton?
 
Murray charges $65 to chamfer the chamber mouths of a cylinder. He's just done some work for me and turned it around in ~ 1 week. Excellent service.

I just sent him the entire gun because I wanted some issues checked out (barrel indexing looks just a smidge off to me). I'm sure I could have sent him just the cylinder though.

btw - for some warranty work, I emailed him about it one week ago, they arranged pre-paid Fedex shipping on Tuesday, Friday Murray called to go over what he found and had done (and we had a nice chat about revolvers in general), today I get an email with a Fedex tracking number and my gun is on it's way back to me. The whole team there (Murray, Tim & Gina) rock!
 
I've heard back from Gina and Murray wants just the cylinder. The gun is 'as new' and leaves a slight mark on the cylinder from the locking bolt as it's coming up just a tad early.
Not as bad as it does on Rugers, but it's still there.

And yes, the price is $65. Well worth it since it means easier speed loading and I intend to shoot the gun in IDPA.

She also told me they have a set of RB grips available. I've already ordered a set from Brownells (Ahrends) but I'm always willing to experiment.
 
What does Charlton charge for an "action job"? I keep my mainspring screw pretty tight. I've handled a few of his PPC guns and the soft hammer fall creeped me out. I've seen them fail even when using Federal primers.
 
I may hold off on getting the cylinder of my 66 snubby chamfered. I30 gr RNFPs drop right in from my Safariland speed loaders without hang up.

Haven't fired any yet (tomorrow night) but I suspect the recoil will be less in that little gun compared to 158 SWCs.
