I told myself no more new purchases until the wife was speaking to me again! That resolution lasted about 48 hours...

I'm thinking of getting a Smith & Wesson Military & Police (M & P) Model 1905 revolver in .38 S & W. Any feedback as to what I should be looking for? As for revolvers, I've only ever shot a single-action .45LC, so my double-action knowledge is limited.

A fine revolver; however finding 38 S&W ammo (as opposed to 38 S&W Special) can be difficult. I would advise to pass on any 38 S&W revolver and choose one chambered for the 38 S&W Special ammunition.

Ditto on the .38S&W

.38S&W is not a .38special cartridge. Some persons like to reload for it but it can be difficult to obtain brass. Some guys cut down 38special brass and try to make that work. The key is to keep the velocity and pressure down. The bullets for .38S&W are also not .357 or .358 as a standard 38special bullet. It has to be .360.
Stick with a 38special caliber revolver.

You're wife is not speaking to you?!?
Hang on to her... those one's are hard to find!!:D

OK, so the .38 S&W is not the same as .38 S&W Special loads. How hard, exactly is it to locate? Are they as pricey as .455 Eley loads?. Just to confuse things, how about rounds for .38 Enfields? Are they .38 S&W or .38S&W Specials? How are they different from .38/200 S &W (is that right?) that Enfields were originally chambered for? I just want to shoot something, damnit!

Very timely question. Surplus rifle just posted an article on the British revolvers. They are indeed .38S&W and they get into some of the details for reloaders as well.

Guns and Ammo TV also did a spot this week on the Enfield revolver. They were shooting one exactly like the one shown the article - DA only, no hammer spur.

.38SW still available from Rem and Win, and I still shooting em...not always in stock, but good enough supply to feed the revolvers...
