S&W M&P 15-22 Modifications

I have done a couple of modifications to my 15-22s, and have created a bit of a "how-to" on Flickr.

The are three photo sets at present:

1. Modifying the existing safety to an ambidextrous safety.

I spoke with CFC and that is not the case at present according to the two people I spoke with last week.

Unless you can point me/anyone to a written decision by CFC that their earlier written decision has been revoked?

Well some dealers are starting to sell them again according to certain people on this site. Its all really confusing IMO.
 
Confusing? Yep!

I bought my two 15-22s a month or so ago, and 22 extra mags (24 in total).

The mags with the rifles were not pinned, and neither were any of the other mags in any of the other boxes I opened.

Of the 22 extra mags, 7 were pinned (1 badly), and the rest not.

I spoke with several people at CFC (including a very helpful and sympathetic tech who I have dealt with before) and the official line is that they should still be pinned.

The dealers (3 or 4) that I have spoken with, and who sell the rifles and mags, were all unaware of the pinning issue, and the importer was also apparently unaware until we emailed him the link. The rifles with mags, and spare mags that I have seen in several shops in more than one province were also unpinned.

We (me and a couple of people) are working on a possible solution, but don't hold your breath.

I will let everyone know as soon as I know anything (but after I have been to the range to do a couple of 25 round mag dumps).

You could buy some of these instead of pinning...easier to do and removal is easier

A lot of people on the S&W forum are polishing trigger group parts and replacing springs with the JP 3.5 lbs springs which you can get here in Canada: h ttp://www.fabsports.ca/reduced-power-springs-p-368.html?language=URL_LANGUAGE
 
Magazine Restrictor

You are aware that the magazine restrictor is not an acceptable modification unless the baseplate is glued or epoxied in place afterwards?

Thanks, I modified them to be as close as possible to my "real" ARs to use as training tools.

Nice work MWL,

I modded mine a bit as well.....

I hogged out a bunch of material in the trigger guard so a BAD lever would work.

It is cuerrently at the 'doctors' getting a shorter barrel installed (fingers crossed). If all goes well, and it isn't too spendy, the guy I have doing it may offer it as a service for those so inclined..... My rifle is the ginny pig......

I also played with the idea of chopping of the stock tube so it could be D&T'd to accept a standard mil-spec buffer tube (so I could install an ASAP). I discarded that idea once I figgured out that the lower isn't quite the same dimensons (width etc.) as a standard lower.

Unfortuantly I didn't take any pics, and the rifle is out of town getting tweaked........ I haven't actually seen my rifle in over 4 months :(

The molded buffer tube is mil-spec already...but i can see why youd want to have a metal one.
 
Shorter Barrel

Notso,

I am interested in the shorter barrel idea. I take it that you are having a new barrel made to replace the original factory barrel? Let me know how that turns out.

If someone is making you a new barrel, get it made with a diameter of either 0.625" or 0.750", and not the current, non standard diameter. It will save having to do the front sight mod. 0.625" would be my choice for a nice lightweight rifle with 10.5" to 12.5" barrel.

Why does this need to be pinned? It looks like an ar15, which is restricted, but in rimfire.... when i had my ar15 with spikes tactical .22 upper, and a 6" barrel i couldve sworn i could use my 25rd black dog magazines, unpinned.

Is the issue with the factory mags the packaging that says it can be used for rifle and pistol?
If so is there any one making similar style 25 rd aftermarket mags (other than the drum type) that dont have this labeling issue?

Pinning mags

The issue in this case (and the Chiappa, I believe), is due to the mags being marketed as "dual purpose", that is for both the rifle and pistol versions.

The more restrictive of the two regulations then applies, that is, the mags are restricted to 10 rounds, as are all pistol mags, rimfire as well as centerfire.

Except for the BDM drum mags, no one else make mags for the S&W yet.
