Hi guys, ........we had our first hiccup with my son's M&P9 last outing. Gun has functioned as expected through around 500 rounds with several different ammo types and three weights till last outing. He got a weird stoppage with the chamber extracted and a fresh round pointing straight up jammed between slide face and chamber. On examination it was caused by the Magazine follower getting stuck in the ambidextrous cut out slot on the mag itself for the mag release to engage. He had just switched the pistol to a left hand mag release configuration prior to us shooting. The follower on these mags appear sharp right to the corner of the follower and can become entrapped in the release cut-out. My Glock mags are smooth inside with the cut-out being in the outer poly so no way to interfere with the follower. My P226 follower is cut back on the corner of the follower to prevent them being entrapped in the ambidextrous mag release cut-outs in the body..

These are the three factory mags from the kit, and I'm not sure if it had something to do with the way the mag release was reversed,..... or if this is a problem that can surface in left-hand setup. I searched the internet and on here to see any complaints thus far and have seen none. I can see a little dremeling on the follower corner to mimic the Sig mag style would probably solve this issue.

Anyone else experience this with M&P 9 factory magazines while using your pistol set up for left hand mag release? Cheers, RTS.

I don't have any experience with the newest mags but my M&P ran just fine with the mag release reversed. These are molded parts, check the follower for mold sprue and poor finishing - it seems they take less care with these parts every week.

I am right handed but changed the mag release to the right side as I find it faster to use my trigger finger to hit the release. Never had a problem. You should have one either. Remove the burrs as you suggest and see how it works. If your son is left handed have him try using his trigger finger to release the mag with the mag release on the left side of the gun. He may find it faster than using his thumb.

Take Care

Bob

Thanks guys for reply's, just checked my email as I thought about contacting S&W after I posted here, something I should have done prior, but anyway they replyed promptly and told me the "Old followers" were the trick for left-hand use and asked how many I needed. So I guess we will be up and running reliably in left hand config when they are installed. Canuck your suggestion may be the ticket for him using his trigger finger, similar to an AR which he is very familiar with. Thanks again.
