S&W M&P mag falling out?

Friends M&P .40cal gun has a problem. Mags keep falling out of gun while he is shooting it. It started after letting someone at club shoot it. I asked all the easy questions already, did the guy drop said pistol, did he slam home the mags doing Robocop reloads etc. Friend said not sure. Does anyone know what might be the problem. He bought gun new and has fired about 500 rounds with it. He has to hold mag in gun to shoot it. He said mag locks in place and stays until first or second round is fired. I told him he might be hitting mag release by accident.
 
Its real easy to take apart. (edit) First remove slide, then just disengage the mag lock/release spring and out it comes. Inspect it and see if its broken. Its mostly plastic, but has metal where the spring bears engages it. No problems with mine yet, but I'm not up to 500 rounds. I've heard of this happening before. Hopefully warranty covers it. Maybe they will send you a new part with just a letter explaining the problem.
 
ya thats a factory problem there having lately. im waiting for mine to start doing it. as far as i know its cus the part that holds the mag in(dont know the name) is plastic and it wears.a few poeple i know that have an M&P have this problem.

also as far as i know its covered by there warranty.
 
When they first came out, I saw this happening at matches all the time. My understanding was that S&W figured out what the issue was, and fixed in subsequent releases.

Call S&W with your serial number- is your gun one of the first batch made?
 
Im really suprised that Smith&Wesson would put out a product without testing it better. I know people that are, and will use this exact gun to protect lives. Its a nice weapon until yer mag falls out. It supposed to replace the old model 10.
 
That problem pre dates Revision N guns, if you've just bought an M&P and you have this problem, chances are your gun was made long before you bought it. Check the dustcover, look for a letter, if you see anything other than the letter N or a pattern of dots you may need a new mag release at some point. This is not a 'new' issue, nor is it a recent one, it is in excess of 2 years old and everyone who shoots more than 20 rounds a year through their pistols has had the issue dealt with. The 'part that holds the mag in' is most assuredly NOT plastic. I have fired 7,500 rounds through 2 different M&P 9mm's (both Rev N or later) and not seen this issue.
 
I seem to recall hearing about this before. Oh yeah that's cuz I warned you guys. I saw 2 of these at my local range in a month, and this was when I was ready to buy one. Needless to say I didn't buy one. I went with the Glock and haven't looked back. It is sad that such a serious issue as this gets out of the factory. One of the ones I saw was brand new, and the guy couldn't get 2 shots off before it happened. How's that for quality control.
 
2006 and a few from 2007 had this issue...easy fix, call with the serial number and they should replace the mag release.
This part was one of only two parts made other than at the smith plant.

Then your gun is later production, you shouldn't have a problem. One thing I have seen is guys trying to top up a mag with the slide forward, and not putting enough force into re-seating it, the mag isn't fully home when they shoot the chambered round, but that's just user error.
 
I shoot a "fun" tactical shoot at my local club every week (there are 5 of us that shoot M&Ps for this, 9's, 40's & 45). I do the ultra fast "robo cop" reloads, where if you slam a mag in hard enough it drops the slide and chambers a round for you. I have even used the surface of a bench with a mag standing straight up to 'slam' a mag home (watch Zombieland, you'll get the idea).

I own 10 mags and all have been dropped on a concrete floor at least 50+ times.

In the last 11 months (thats how long I have owned this M&P 9) I have put over 9K down range. 8500 of those rounds were cast lead bullets.

I have gone 2K between cleanings and even then I only cleaned it because I "thought it was time".... I never clean it unless it is at least 500 to 600 rnds (I find it to be more 'accurate' the dirtier it is).

So far I have yet to experiance a single problem with my M&P...... Wait a sec, that's not true...... When the mags are brand spanking new, if you have 10 rnds in the mag you cannot seat them properly with the slide closed...... I left my mags loaded for about 2 to 3 weeks and the problem went away.... 'just cus' I didn't subject 2 mags to this treatment, it took approx 35 to 40 loading & then unloading (using my trigger finger) to finally get those mags to function 100%.

Needless to say.... I am a BIG FAN of my M&P 9 :D

It has all of the same parts in it as the day I got it.... I have not had to replace a single thing, not even a spring.... This thing just takes and takes abuse!

I'm starting to think that abuse is the secret ingredient for success with the M&P, I run mine as hard as I can all the time and they (9 and 45) never hiccup.

my 40 had the same issue. It is covered under warranty - email MD Charlton.

I paid for the part to be sent to me, part was 5 bucks, and shipping. Or you can send them your M&P, they will do an inspection and maintenance, and install the new part.
From what I noticed, the new mag release is slightly, just a little, fatter, so it seats tighter in the pistol grip.

New mag release has 900+ rounds through - no issues.

I will post a rant if it does happen again.
