The M&P15-22 also features a fully functional charging handle, an AR-15 style magazine release, bolt catch and a two-position receiver mounted safety. The M&P15-22 is complete with a removable 25 round magazine along with a removable A2-style front post sight, an adjustable A2-style rear sight and a single stage trigger. An optional barrel shroud will be available later this fall.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (August 19, 2009)--Smith & Wesson Corp. has begun shipping the new M&P15-22 tactical rifles.

The M&P15-22 is a dedicated .22 LR platform manufactured with a high strength polymer upper and lower receiver, offering reduced weight while being chambered in the more economical ammunition.

“The new M&P15-22 was specifically designed to offer consumers, law enforcement and military professionals, as well as AR-15 enthusiasts a lightweight yet durable rifle with operating controls that function identically to other M&P15 rifles currently in production.” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson.

The M&P15-22 features a 16-inch barrel with a twist of 1 in 15 inches. The semi-automatic rifle is standard with a six-position collapsible stock to accommodate a variety of shooters and shooting positions, an A3 style flat top upper receiver with a quad-rail handguard for easily mounting optional accessories and an A2 pistol grip for improved firearm control.

The M&P15-22 has an unloaded weight of approximately 5 pounds. The rifle measures 31 inches with the stock collapsed and 34 inches with the stock fully extended. The M&P15-22 is designed to accept all 1913 Mil. Std. rail adaptable accessories, Mil-Spec carbine stocks and most standard after-market AR-15 pistol grips.

I was watching Guns & Ammo TV a couple of weeks back, apparently it can take an AR lower.... My guess is Restricted for sure......

And yet according to the Smith & Wesson magazine sitting on my desk.....
The interface dimensions of the upper and lower units are intentionally designed to differ slightly from centerfire specifications to make it impossible for anyone to install a standard AR-15 upper receiver on a polymer M&P15-22 lower receiver or vice versa.

I hope and pray it's non-restricted.

(E)

It should be Non-restricted, I read an article about it and agree with "ECHO" on the swapping parts ordeal. It has been designed so you can't swap parts with a standard AR-15, but can add a bunch of goodies to it to make it even more scarier!!!! He He

Considering the aesthetics and the overall lack of intelligence that goes into the classification process, there's practically no way this rifle will see itself given a non-restricted tag. Not that it makes much of a difference to me, seeing as I live in the middle of the national capital region... only real places to shoot are clubs.

That and I've already fired on a Norinco CQ 5.56 + CMMG conversion, so I couldn't care less at this point. Have fun waiting, fellas.

Someone should make a case for it. being non-restricted When they fiirst started writing legislation to restrict and ban guns yes all they did was look through a guns annual and pick out the scary looking guns - but now the CFC seems to be doing their best to be consistent in interpreting the law ( please don't flame me and no I'm not joining the dark side -just telling it the way I see it) . So if S&W deliberately designed it not to accept centerfire AR parts it shold have a shot at making non-retricted ( after all, the VSZ 858 did)

I for one would be extremely interested - as in, where do i send my $$ :D:D- in a N/R version.

BTW this month's shooting Times has a quite favorable review - cover story in it
