I already have the ruger in stainless with plenty of mags, only issue with the gun is that it really only cycles CCI Minimags 100% reliably.

I am considering selling it or trading it for a S&W M&P22.
I have no complaints about the ruger at all other than its fussy diet but that's the same with a lot of 22s.

For people who have owned both, should I just keep the ruger and forget about the Smith or is it worth the change?
My main interest is reliability, durability and accuracy.

Have you replaced the extractor in the Ruger? My 22/45 was awful, I disassembled it and found that there actually was no extractor! It was sent back to Ruger and fixed/replaced. I think this is the weak link in an otherwise good design. It cycled afterwards with pretty much any round I put through it. Might be worth a $10 Volquartsen extractor.
That being said, I now only have a 22 revolver; cycles great!

I have the MKIII Hunter and mine shoots and cycles regular ammo fine. Lost count on the number of rounds fired....3 - 4 thousand...no issues. Federal 36gr bulk 525 round pack is my go to ammo. For sure one firearm I won't sell.

Yeah put a VQ extractor in after the first range trip, just seems to prefer minimags to bulk pack.
As I said no complaints about the ruger just thinking of a change and the Smith being more like a centre fire handgun in shape and size, figured it mightn't be a bad replacement.

I'm operating on a sell one/buy one basis at the moment, I wouldn't sell the ruger only it's the only 22 pistol I own and it would have to go before buying another.

I have an M&P22 and broke the ejector on some ammo it didn't like. I stick to the Minimags too. That said it's an easy shooting gun and my girlfriend uses it almost exclusively.

If you want a duty style .22 go with the M&P22. If you want a target pistol, keep the ruger. Or upgrade to a Mk IV Hunter.. Why, they're ###y looking.

I have both the M&P22 and a Ruger Mark 2 SS. And I won't get rid of either. They both perform great. And seem to eat any ammo I give them. I am very pleased. On the other hand I have a ISSC Mk22, and it only likes CCI High Velocity. And even with that, I will have light strike failures.

Time to clean / replace the firing pin I would think and check return springs

If you're happy with the Ruger other than it being fussy for ammo then take some time and effort to tune it.

You'll want to check the bolt to be sure it floats super freely in the receiver for starters. It should be able to slide each way when you tilt the receiver by about 15 to 20° at most. If it doesn't then find the burr or other issue and smooth it out.

When you lube the bolt be sure to lubricate the heel below the anvil of the firing pin and along the spine on the lower side of the bolt. This will help ease the friction from the hammer being cocked and dragging along the lower spine.

If neither of these things helps then look at changing out the recoil spring. Your spring might be stiffer than the spec. If so that'll cause it to only function with the hotter MM ammo.

Let the path of the ejected empty cases be your guide. When working well you should see the empty casings being ejected out to land at least 6 to 8 feet away from the gun. If they are just barely dribbling out over your hand then the recoil spring is too strong for the ammo.

I've got two of the Rugers and they both work fine with regular HV ammo as well as SV ammo of a number of brands. The only thing it seems at all sensitive about is some of the rather square nosed hollow point bullets. And the many Mk II's and III's I've seen belonging to other folks seem to share this. Yours appears to be the exception.

Don't own the Ruger and with take down time I wouldn't own anything but the new Mark IV. I do own the M&P22, nearly 2000 rounds down the pipe since June 2016 with nary a hickup. It eats just about anything, including CCI HP 36 gr and no problem with Blazer 40gr lead at 6-8 cents a round. Absolutely love the gun and field stripping takes 5 seconds, literally. It also fits my holster if you are into that sort of thing and makes a great training tool for the larger calibers.
