Well i was in the gun store today and found a almost mint M27 for $400.It has the 5" barrel and target sights. Good deal? Well i had the smith at the gun shop test fire and the stip the pistol for a peak inside,All most new! Any one here have one of these revolvers? I am having the gun re-blued and tuned to put it back to full mint.If any one has any idea were to find leather and speed loaders for this revolver or whant to sell surplus let me know. When she comes back i will post some pics.

Thanks,
Dave

I would say for $400, jump on it, but not if you're going to reblue it! Enjoy it for what it is. You will be spending money to make it worth less. I would only consider rebluing on a well-worn but mechanically sound gun with little collector value.

If you holster the gun, you will get some finish wear anyway.

Ther was a small amount of wear at the end of the barrel, I want to keep for the collection. I had them re-blue my M10 and it looks great so what the heck just get this one done while they have time. The 5" almost looks as short as the 4" as i thought it was a pro-hib at first! Its a M27-2 , The wife is so pissed i got another gun. She does not know how cool this revolver is.

I don't think you realise how collectible a 5" S&W Model 27 is in the condition you describe. These guns aren't particularly common and deserve to be preserved in their natural state.

I agree with NOT getting this pistol re-blued. By all means buy it (if you don't I will :D) but it is very rare, and worth considerably more than the asking price in original condition - refinished it's just a used gun with an unknown history. Refinishing it makes it worth what you're paying for it. In this case less money spent is more value.

Sounds like the advice to not re-blue is too late from his posts. Oh well.

To me some moderate amount of patina that speaks of love and care in the use of a gun or any other mechanical device is an enhancement rather than a detriment. It speaks of the history it has seen.

And if this is coming back from re-bluing to bring it up to as new then it implies you will not be doing much or any shooting with it. That also brings a sigh to mind since I feel we can't truly appreciate what a kinetic machine is really all about unless we see it driving, riding, flying or in this case shooting. It's not like it needs to be a regular range pig but it would be nice to use for a few boxes of ammo per year just to better appreciate the gun in all its facets.

Obviously I'm not a glass case sort of collector.... :D

Yes, it's a screaming deal. No, I wouldn't reblue. I would shoot it.

Unless it is unfired and NIB, shooting it won't lower it's value as much as one would think.

FWIW, I've seen unfired, NIB handguns that have lost their "collector value" due to rust and pitting because they were stored improperly. The were only taken out of the factory boxes when they were new for a 'looksy' and put away. They weren't inspected or oiled on a regular or semi-regular basis. Just put away and forgotten for 10-20 years........The pitting and rust required rebluing and/or parts replacement to make them sellable. What a shame....

If you do go ahead and re-blue that piece of history you should be beaten soundly with a sock full of quarters!!! I've been looking for a factory 5"-er for years...

blake

The 5" M-27 is IMHO the most desirable version, then the 3.5" version. It sounds like you have a great deal there, but as other have said, I wouldn't worry about blueing the gun until is becomes necessary. Handling marks and honest ware add much to a gun's character.

i am an avid collector of S&W firearms and have a preference to the M-27's {i have 2}, you picked up a great gun at an excellant price. a little wear on the finish is like others have said..."adds character". but if you reblued it already, so be it....you will enjoy shooting it. I use a Galco leather holster or an Uncle Mikes Duty Nylon holster for mine, and HKS speedloaders to help feed them. they shouldnt be hard to find. Have fun with your new/old purchase...
