S&W M29-2 Before and After

Looks classy! Good job resurrecting that gun.

Elmer Keith also had one of his .44 Magnums shortened to 4-1/2".

Just a refinish from Murray would be pretty economical and then you've got a new looking wheelie :D

How does it work with the CFC? If i bought a 29 with a 6.5 inch barrel it is registered as such. If you have it worked on and the barrel is shortened, who calls the CFC? The gunsmith or me? How does it all work?

Hi GG34,

Well there are two ways of handling it.

The first one is to say and do nothing. You haven't changed the class of the handgun and the barrel is still over the min limit.

(This option might bring out more than a few comments but I wanted to state it upfront)

The second one is the Gun Smith that does the work, verifies the length and calls the CFC. The CFC changes their entry and issues a new cert. for the pistol.

It's pretty straight forward and not that big of a deal with either option.

Hope that helps :)

When it comes to classic Smiths I guess I would consider myself a purist. I wouldn't dream of modding a clean specimen. But considering the condition you got it in, I'd say you did the right thing.

Was going to do the 4.2" chop but someone posted a pic of a 4.5" M29 that had been done by S&W Custom Shop.

Here she is:

I esp. like those grips. I'm looking to replace the Pachmayr grips on my 625, mostly for aesthetic reasons. I was going to get a set of "conversion" (round to square) checkered finger groove grips from Altamont:

but those smooth ones may be even better.
