S&W Model 27 ?

Here is a pic of my N-frame collection. From left to right a 29-2, 25-5, 28-2, 27-2 and 25-2. I Am looking to add a Model 57 and 24-3 to the collection.

Here is a pic of my S&W collection. I have since added a Model 586 and 686. I am looking for a Model 15 and 48 to add to the collection.

What is the second number after the dash indicating ? Like 29-2 ?
I progress in my learning of S&W nomenclature
I know the frames numbers meaning, and that if a six is before that mean stainless...

Try ``PhotoBucket`` to host your pictures. When they're uploaded, use the last picture option (the 4th bottom one) to copy the image, they paste it in your posting. Before loading the pictures to PhotoBucket, resize them the dimensions you want. PM me if you have any problems with this.....

Oh, that 3.5 inch S Prefix 357 Magnum is a dream gun!! I'd suggest the day you want to part with it, run an auction !! I have no worries you'd get in the 4 figures for that one...May I bid ??

That's a mighty fine looking collection. And if Mush, the OP, isn't drooling all over his keyboard at these pictures then he has NO soul!

For myself over the next couple or three years I'm hoping to add a 1917 or newer version for some .45ACP giggles, a Model 10 or earlier M&P in .38Spl and a full on Dirty Harry special with 5 inch barrel to go with my own M28 in .357.

Great pictures !! 624 Snub is very nice. How is it shooting ?? Heavy loads ??

But I must admit that for a longtime collector like me THAT 3.5 inches .357 Magnum is a GEM !! Congrats on this very nice & RARE S&W !!

The 3 1/2" M27 is probably the ###iest gun ever built, it replaced the 1911 in 38 Super with the FBI.

Shoots very well with 240 gr cast bullets, pushed to right around 1000 fps. If I'm having a good day and have the right glasses on, I can chew up the center of a 2" bullseye at 25 meters. The 6.5" is easier to shoot but not quite as accurate from a rest. - dan

Anyone besides me have a pathological hatred of the " Hilary Hole" on the newer guns? It just doesn't belong , especially on something called a classic model. Great collections,guys. Good luck to the new guys with the fever comin on.

The Hillary Hole doesn't bother me as much as the stainless steel that has been rather roughly finished resulting in some of the edges in the ones I've seen being slightly malformed. The flat sides should be flat and the curved edges even and where they meet the lines should be straight and the shapes crisp. Two out of the three stainless models I've seen fail by a small margin in this regard vs the shapes of the older blued versions. Also I don't care for fully lugged barrels that look like they were rough sanded to an odd shape and then left that way.

The quality of S+W's has been going downhill since the change to unpinned barrels, if not before. Now they have 2 piece barrels, MIM'ed hammers and triggers ...

I have 5 of them , all pinned.

Hi any S&W made before 1984 were good and the ones made in the early 60's and the 50's are better quality wise you cant beet older Smiths.Heres a few of my .357"s the one on top is a 686 no dash then a 28-2 and a Pre Model 27 5 screw and 19-3 and there all great shooters the new classic ones look nice but the hole nah i don't think so thats the only thing that turns me off from buying the new Smiths to bad there not even pinned and recessed neither that sucks if there were to make them like the old ones i'm sure there sales would go through the roof....

I too don't care for S&W revolvers with the internal locks. It takes away from the nice clean lines. My S&W .357 magnums from top to bottom... a model 686-3, 28-2, 27-2 and 19-4. All but the 686 has pinned barrels and recessed cylinders.

Here's my five incher. I think it is the best well balanced Model 27.

I just love the typical serrations of the 27. (sorry for the blurred pic)
